I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was so sad when it was done. His accounts of his interactions with modern matadors as well as his research into the history of bullfighting were fascinating. If you interested at all in the bullfight this is a must!
I just got done with this book and all I can say is WOW! Betty Dodson is truly a feminist, hedonist, sex-positive, artist, bisexual tour-de-force! This is truly one of those books that is making me reexamine how I am going to live the rest of my life. I would make this required reading for every woman in America! And the narrator was FANTASTIC! Her lusty narration and ability to say out loud many of the sexual scenarios without flinching was truly professional and refreshing. Bravo to both women!!!
After watching, "Adaptation" I wanted to read the book that was so hard to turn into a screenplay. I now know why. This was a really well researched, historically interesting book which I found well put together and funny at times. Maybe what was ultimately lacking, and that which the author freely admits to, is that she chose to write a book about being passionate about something having never really felt that way herself. And it is apparent in her writing. All the ingredients were there for an awesome book, but it just sort of fell flat. Even with all of the interesting people she met and wrote about. I'm not sad I listened to it (and I thought the narrator was spot on) but overall it was mediocre.
This book was a little out of my usual meanderings but I enjoyed immensely. My boyfriend is a conspiracy theory nut so it was a nice way to learn about some of the "biggies" in that arena without having to sit in front of a computer for hours mining for information. The author is very funny, as well. A great read when you want something on a serious subject but not too seriously presented.
I recently have found myself writing to someone incarcerated and thought I would listen to this collection of poems and stories written by the incarcerated. I knew there would be some interesting and compelling stories but I was absolutely floored by some of the writing. Really excellent. And the way it was strung together and narrated only added to the experience. I was so sad when it came to an end!
I really wanted to like this book, but as the hours droned on I kept finding myself waiting for something, anything, to happen besides a boring discourse between fictional characters I couldn't have cared less about. I made it through 15 hours and then abandoned it. If you like boring conversations between upper class snobs this book is for you! Otherwise pass on it.
Timothy Dalton's voice is why I listened to this. The story wasn't awful but I would say it was mediocre. But I listened to very word of it because it was so masterly narrated. If you are looking for more of an "audio experience" this would be a good choice.
Excellent book. Excellent narration. Very detailed. Cried at the end. We all miss you, Kurt.
Wow. I'm glad I don't live in Cormac McCarthy's mind. What a hellish and frightening place that must be to come up with a story like this! I truly felt like this was "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" meets "Lord of the Flies". I liked the father and son relationship. The narrator did a bang up job of being the boy as well as the father. To say this book is disturbing would be an understatement. Bleak. Beyond bleak with little rays of humanity that peak out every now and then. I'm not sorry I listened to it. But once was definitely enough.
I feel like I would like to sit down and (since I don't partake of alcohol) at least share a soda with Norah Vincent. She had a very funny and refreshing insight on the male of the species as well as class issues in America. Very down to earth but without "dumbing it down" either. I just wished the audio book had been a little longer.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I awaited each new chapter wondering what the next topic was going to be. The narrator did an excellent job. I was sad when it ended.
