Well I have read all of Peter F Hamilton's books on Audible and some that aren't, I was not sure what I was expecting when I started reading this but I have loved PFH's other stuff so I figured this is probably good - just a few years after these 3 books made him really famous he wrote "The Nights Dawn" (come on Audible get this one in audio format, not here as of 7-9-12) and its just a great set of books, maybe better than these I will know when I finish these so check my review of the last book The Nano Flower when I finish it
There are 3 books and the stories are set in a near-future England, centered around "Hamilton's" own home county of Rutland. Mandel is a former officer of the 'English Army', who fought in the 'Mindstar Brigade', a tactical psychic unit. He was given the psychic powers of intuition and detecting emotions, skills he uses for his new profession of psychic detective.
What I found pretty cool is that there is a "credit crash", "housing market crash" and "global warming" as well as some other things that have either happened already or are likely to happen soon in the future in the real world we live in today and this was written in 1993!
It is good but not in the way his latter works are, this being written in 1993 has some "dated" things in it namely a "Peoples Socialist Party", when is the last time you herd that stuff being spouted since the Berlin Wall fell? - there are some "hacking" that's reminiscent of the movie "Hackers" (1995) how it was not really much like actual hacking is like but made it look cool, in this book its sorta like people thought it would turn out to be until the internet came so big, many methods of attack do work but the way its executed is as bad as Hollywood is today and we should know by now how hacking works - other than that mostly its a great book that doesn't show its age in many other ways than the Socialist thing.
Greg can detect emotions which is pretty cool and one would think that you could get ahead pretty well in life with those powers, and he does pretty well for him self - but he's got this friend who can predict the future, and she doesn't seem to "Rule the World" as someone with that ability should likely be doing, she doesn't do much at all from what is made clear and this is really strange if you can predict the future at least the future around you (don't work far off) why aren't you rich as hell, I don't know but other than that everything makes sense in the book
This is the last book in the series and if you read the last one you can pretty much have to get this one because this is the end and it has a really good ending.
I mentioned in previous reviews the narrator isnt the best and I am still not used to him now so that is a warning to anyone reading this review who hasnt started the series but the story is pretty good here so give the free prequel a try, if its still free and go from there.
The way this plays out is great and not how I expected including the ending but its great, I dont know what could be said here since there is a free prequel you can probably just get that and see how it is, if you like that then you will be good with the rest
If you liked the last book then you pretty much have to get this book and go on with the story so as the title says its the return of Gabriel and if you read the last book then you know the world.
This story is different from the last one but all of them have something that will come together in the end of the last book so pay attention to the characters names.
Now there is some really cool tech in here the suites they wear are like invisible suites and they use them really well, I want one of those.
I think there isnt much to say about the second book in a series if you liked the first one you will probably like the rest
what else can I say it was free and probably will always be free so just download it and give it a try.
If its not free then thats strange cuz its in the title but anyways this was a great short story that gets you started in the series and I really liked it
The narrator isnt the best it takes a while to get used to him but he does talk strange sorta like talking to a child or something for some reason after I finished the whole series I was just not used to it
The story is nice it does a good job at setting you up in the world but not the story that comes in the next 3 books so read the reviews of that to see what they are about but if you like this then you will like the next 3 books
Well if you got to this point you probably really liked the series so this is sorta a review on how the series ended.
I hope there are more books that continue this story or maybe what happened at the military command to cause the events of this book to happen, sending someone to kill Lee and someone taking over command because the president couldnt be found and he was the only one in the chain of command who was there so he was the guy - he causes problems and seeing what happened there would be pretty cool.
This series is really good and only lacking in a few areas IMO like a little more interactions with more groups of people or building things its mostly the surviving.
I really liked these books having read and watched TWD I was ready for more of zombies so this fit right in, I will be looking for more survival/zombie/horror books in the future.
This is the 3rd book and if you have gotten this far in the series you probably dont need a review, these are continuous books and they dont have a different story arch for each book other than it continuing, its not like some series so reviews arent needed for each book.
This is the second book and really this series is a whole continuous story that could have been 1 whole book but it would have been really long, the ending of the books arent something of an ending its something that you really want to read more to find out what happens next and Audible knows that so they included the first chapter to this book in the end of the first book and the 3rd book in the end of this one and so on.
if you liked book 1 then you know you will like this one, in fact you should probably just get the other 2 books since its just more of the same and if you liked that then why not.
This is a series of books that are meant to be read one after another as in the story stops and picks up in the next book, almost at the same point its not something that is sorta the same - so that being the case this review will sorta be the whole review of the series while the other books will have reviews just shorter ones.
The zombies in this series can sorta plan ambushes and sneak attack which makes for a more interesting zombies or "infected" as they are called, its not like you are used to seeing in movies or TV shows like TWD - the infection effected about 90% of the population and its unclear if there are any immune people but its unlikely and the other 10% are just the people who survived and they can get infected as some do but it takes direct blood to open wound contact or something close to that just getting blood on you isnt enough but if you swallowed some you would probably get infected.
This series starts off without much of a back story for the main character but as you get into it you pick up on things that help you understand who he is better, Lee is in a bunker that the government built for him and its his job to go into it when they tell him to and he is given a set of instructions to follow which include that if he looses commutation with command he is to wait 48 hours and open a special box that has more instructions in it and to wait 30 days before leaving the bunker after the last contact with command.
Well to make a long story shorter he leave a little early because of what he is told is happening outside, which is crazy stuff.
Lee gets out and things keep going wrong for him and its like whats on the board in his bunker "The only easy day was yesterday" really is his motto as things progressively get worse for him as his plans keep failing.
There are a few things I think were missing from the series or things that should have been done differently but for the most part I really liked it.
This is a good story and at times you think you know whats going to happen next and you are wrong, people get killed that you didnt think would and everything like that - I liked the whole series and I hope that its not the end I would like to see more books in the same world that continue this story because there are some unanswered things a whole other story happening with the command of the military that isnt in contact with Lee and I hope it gets written
I said this in the first 2 reviews I would like to tell you to read this but be warned that book 3 ends with no real ending and there isn't at this time a book 4 so if you are one of those people that doesn't like that sorta thing just wait and see if book 4 comes out - that is at the time of this review (11-24-13)
I liked the first 2 books lots and that's why this one isn't a 2 star because it should be when rated with the other 2 - its not that its a bad book, it just seems incomplete and ends with no ending at all, like there is another book but as of this time there isn't (11-24-13) and I can't see a reason to end it like this at all.
Not much of a review because if you liked the first 2 books then you will like this one except for the non-ending that is
I would like to tell you to read this but be warned that book 3 ends with no real ending and there isn't at this time a book 4 so if you are one of those people that doesn't like that sorta thing just wait and see if book 4 comes out - at the time of this review (11-24-13)
If you read my review of book 1 you know I would like to tell you to read this but be warned that book 3 ends with no real ending and there isn't at this time a book 4 so if you are one of those people that doesn't like that sorta thing just wait and see if book 4 comes out.
I like this book like the first one and now that Morgan is home he is the only one with power because of his solar setup and he has plenty of food since he stored most of it for something like this so he and his family would be safe.
Some people don't like that and really want him to share so he has to explain it a little, you will probably not expect hat happens to happen or how it happens so I wont ruin anything for you but if you read book 1 you can probably figure it out.
This is a really good book almost better than the first book and I would love to tell you to read this and book 3 but like I said before if you are the type of person who doesn't like unfinished series this one is probably not for you - at least at the time of this review (11-24-13) it is unclear if there is going to be another book but I will have to assume so because I really don't understand the ending of book 3
First let me say that this is a series of 3 books but there must be a fourth one that's not yet written at the time of this review (11-24-13) I would like to tell you to read this but be warned that book 3 ends with no real ending and there isn't at this time a book 4 so if you are one of those people that doesn't like that sorta thing just wait and see if book 4 comes out
I must say that I was not expecting this to be so good but after listening to the sample I thought I would have to give it a try so I did and I was glad. This is a really plausible story and I would believe that something like this is in the works now.
Without ruining anything you know the power is out everywhere and most all electronics and cars don't work so people are screwed for the most part unless you planed for something like this and prepared by storing stuff.
The only thing that kept this from a 5 star rating was the way some things were handled, I understand its the authors story to tell but there were some things that seemed obvious to me to avoid and I am not a prepper like the character in the book.
Morgan is the buy and he has to get home to his wife and 3 girls which is 250 miles away and he has to walk, so you can assume that something crazy is going to happen on the way, even if the "event" or whatever it should be called didn't happen like in this book walking 250 miles home you are probably going to encounter some crazy stuff so now that there is no real communications and most all cars don't work no power people are acting really crazy.
From the title of book 2 you know he gets home so that's no real surprise but you will probably not expect what happens to happen, but like I said in the beginning of the review - read below again.
I would like to tell you to read this but be warned that book 3 ends with no real ending and there isn't at this tome a book 4 so if you are one of those people that doesn't like that sorta thing just wait and see if book 4 comes out
