The first Inspector Wexford story, this story is a little dated as you'd expect as it's almost fifty years old. I surmised the murderer early but it was still satisfying to hear the story unfold.

I particularly enjoyed this one, despite quickly uncovering the solution, and having to wait for the Inspector and his team to catch up - but it was a fun ride all the same.

Other highlights were the descriptions of 1970s London - oh, if only we could visit Hampstead in that day instead of today!

I've read this book many times, it being a personal favourite so I wasn't sure whether hearing it as well would add anything but I was wrong: Tim Piggott-Smith brought it all to life. I didn't want it to end. I'll be listening to this one again.

This was an audiobook that I didn't want to end: the story is amusing and entertaining, well written and it really brought the time and place to life. Jeremy Northam does an excellent job reading it, I'd like to hear more of his books.

I enjoyed this one much more than the first Wexford book: it's like Ruth Rendell is getting into her stride, the characters are well painted and the story satisfyingly complex. Nigel Anthony does a good job bringing it to life too: I could almost see the house where the murder took place.

I haven't read the print version but I'm loving the audio versions.
