I read all the John Jakes books many years ago and was interested in listening to the audio version of what is probably his most popular work. This book has not aged well, in fact, I see it now as borderline offensive. From the gallant slaveowners to Virgilia, an abolitionist, portrayed so negatively, the tone of the book really turns me off. Added to the fact is I really didn't enjoy the narrator.
