At 24 years of age, U.S. Army Ranger Sean Parnell was named commander of a forty-man elite infantry platoon - a unit that came to be known as the Outlaws - and was tasked with rooting out Pakistan-based insurgents from a mountain valley along Afghanistan's eastern frontier. Parnell and his men assumed they would be facing a ragtag bunch of civilians, but in May 2006 what started out as a routine patrol through the lower mountains of the Hindu Kush became a brutal ambush.

    Any additional comments?

One of the best books on this conflict without the jingoism and the cliched tales of childhood and training. A very intelligent and insightful book on people under stress. I have 750 hours of listening to audio books and this one rates in the top 5.

It is August 1974, and a tightrope walker is suspended between the twin towers, watched by thousands in the streets below. Elegantly weaving together their seemingly disparate lives, McCann's powerful novel comes alive in the unforgettable voices of the city's people, unexpectedly drawn together by hope, beauty, and the tightrope walker's "artistic crime of the century".

Chandon says: "A GREAT PORTRAIT OF NYC IN 1970s"
"it doesnt get any better than this!"

Where does Let the Great World Spin rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

this book has a remarkable story and the ensemble cast that narrate it are a joy to listen to. Highly recommended and probably the first book that I would listen to again.

The Bedford Boys is the astonishing true story of 21 young men who were killed during the first horrifying minutes of D-Day and the friends and families they left behind in the small town of Bedford. Twenty-one sons killed - no other town in America suffered a greater loss in one day. It is an unforgettable story of triumph, courage, and tragedy based on extensive interviews with survivors and relatives as well as diaries and letters.

What disappointed you about The Bedford Boys?

great material but poorly written. No analysis. Like reading a tabloid newspaper.Hopefully the interview material can be donated to other writer who could do a better job.

The Mongol army led by Genghis Khan subjugated more lands and people in 25 years than the Romans did in 400. In nearly every country the Mongols conquered, they brought an unprecedented rise in cultural communication, expanded trade, and a blossoming of civilization.

What a thin book this is. I was wondering whether I was reading the same book as the reviewers who gave it 4+ stars. Weatherford without much justification credits the Mongols with most of what is good in the world. I was waiting for Weatherford to claim that the Mongols had split the atom first or that they gave Steve Jobs the inspiration for the iPhone. Avoid.

"Economic hit men," John Perkins writes, "are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. Their tools include fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder."

Robert P. says: "Excellent Story for people have traveled"
    "bloated self indulgence"
    Overall

John Perkins the author would like us to think that he is revealing to us hidden truths but all we get is self righteous musings of unnecessary length. He does not reveal any facts or true confessions. All we get is "hearsay" and the type of car he was driving. Perkins in fact has committed a scam on his readers. Do not waste your time or money on this rubbish.
