Whatever happened to Calico Joe? It began quietly enough with a pulled hamstring. The first baseman for the Cubs AAA affiliate in Wichita went down as he rounded third and headed for home. The next day, Jim Hickman, the first baseman for the Cubs, injured his back. The team suddenly needed someone to play first, so they reached down to their AA club in Midland, Texas, and called up a 21-year-old named Joe Castle. He was the hottest player in AA and creating a buzz....

What made the experience of listening to Calico Joe the most enjoyable?

The history of baseball needs to be told, even if some is fiction.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A sexual to "Shoeless Joe Jackson Comes to Iowa."

It's just seven days before Memorial Day, and a spike in CIA intelligence has pointed to a major terrorist attack on the United States. Now it's up to counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp to pull out all the stops. Rapp immediately leaves for Afghanistan, where he leads a special forces unit on a daring commando raid across the border into a remote Pakistani village. Their target: an al-Qaeda stronghold. Rapp and his team soon discover plans for a catastrophic nuclear attack on Washington, DC.

Would you listen to Memorial Day again? Why?

Probably, though I seldom repeat one.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I listen in my car to and from work. I wanted to lengthen my 20 min. trip to stay with it.

What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He get's into the characters and gives them personality.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I think it would have been well worth it.

    Any additional comments?

I immediately downloaded the next one. Ready to go.

The Spandau Diary -- what was in it? Why did the secret intelligence agencies of every major power want it? Why was a brave and beautiful woman kidnapped to get it? Why did a chain of deception and violent death lash out across the globe, from survivors of the Nazi past to warriors in this new conflict about to explode? Why did the world's entire history of World War II have to be rewritten as the future hung over a nightmare abyss?

Where does Spandau Phoenix rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It was different from most I read. I enjoyed it, but it was too long.

What about Dick Hill’s performance did you like?

Dick Hill is my favorite reader. I often choose books because of him, not necessarily because of story.

Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Best classic I've used in the classroom.

What about Tim Robbins’s performance did you like?

Very good. There has never been a good reading of this before. Bradbury's reading of his work turns me off.

What was most disappointing about Brad Thor’s story?

The story was too slow and could not hold my attention. Too much unnecessary detail.

Would you be willing to try another one of George Guidall’s performances?

The issue was not Guidall's performance. It was the material he had to work with.

    Any additional comments?

More than simply a shorter version of the novel, the short story is a unique and rewarding literary form in itself. It offers a world in miniature faithfully captured by the author's mastery of character, plot, setting, image, and theme. The time it takes to read a short story may be brief, but its impact lasts much longer. Short story writers see by the light of the flash," says author and Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer. "Theirs is the art of the only thing that one can be sure of-the present moment."

    Depends on the topic.
