  • Frankenstein, Book One: Prodigal Son

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Dean Koontz, Kevin J. Anderson
    • Narrated By Scott Brick

The first in a mesmerizing four-book original series, Prodigal Son is a brilliant re-imagining and updating of the classic Frankenstein story that only Dean Koontz could conceive. Two hundred years old, the "monster", Deucalion, is a monster no more. Literate and intelligent, he arrives in modern-day New Orleans, where he will join forces with a street-smart police detective and her partner on the trail of a macabre serial killer.

John D. Grote says: "CSI -Transylvania"
    "Couldn't turn this off"

Mr. Koontz has turned out yet another great book. I simply could not turn it off and cannot WAIT until August for the next in the series.

  • Cross Country

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By James Patterson
    • Narrated By Peter J. Fernandez, Dion Graham
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When the home of Alex Cross's oldest friend, Ellie Cox, is turned into the worst murder scene Alex has ever seen, the destruction leads him to believe that he's chasing a horrible new breed of killer. As Alex and his girlfriend, Brianna Stone, become entangled in the deadly Nigerian underworld of Washington D.C., what they discover is shocking: a stunningly organized gang of lethal teenagers headed by a powerful, diabolical man--the African warlord known as the Tiger.

    "Patterson is written out"

I'm afraid Patterson is just written out. He churns out books so frequently the quality has begun to suffer the plots are really contrived. Not even the best of the DC PD would go to Africa after a killer. That's the CIA's dept. I think this book was more a disguised political statement for the horrors going on there. I appreciate that (the awareness) but maybe Patterson needs to put out a Non-Fiction book for that purpose. The Women's Murder Club and Alex Cross series are really started to sound a like. Just rename the supporting characters. At this rate, Lindsey will be heading to Russia after her next murder suspect.

  • Step on a Crack

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 54 mins)
    • By James Patterson, Michael Ledwidge

    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

NYPD Detective Michael Bennett is about to take on the most sinister challenge of his career. Then the inconceivable occurs. Billionaires, politicians, and superstars of every kind are suddenly trapped within one man's brilliant and cold-blooded scenario.

    TEDDET says: "Classic good Patterson"
    "More Please!"

I love this character and his interaction with his family. I sure hope we get another in the series!

  • At Home in Mitford: The Mitford Years, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 25 mins)
    • By Jan Karon
    • Narrated By John McDonough

It's easy to feel at home in Mitford. In these high, green hills, the air is pure, the village is charming, and the people are generally lovable. Yet Father Tim, the bachelor rector, wants something more. Enter a dog the size of a sofa who moves in and won't go away. Add an attractive neighbor who begins wearing a path through the hedge. Now, stir in a lovable but unloved boy, a mystifying jewel theft, and a secret that's 60 years old.

Shirley says: "You wish you lived there and knew these people"
"Watching from a Porch with Iced Tea"

This book is wonderful in that I feel like I'm sitting on a good ole Southern wrap around porch drinking Sweet Tea and watching the life of these town members go by. The only problem is the book is so relaxing, I can't listen to it while driving or trying to work because I end up day dreaming and too relaxed to concentrate. A very good book to listen to when you have the time to sit and listen to life go by.

  • Life Expectancy

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Dean Koontz
    • Narrated By John Bedford Lloyd
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Jimmy Tock comes into the world on the very night his grandfather leaves it. As a violent storm rages outside the hospital, Rudy Tock spends long hours walking the corridors between the expectant fathers' waiting room and his dying father's bedside. It's a strange vigil made all the stranger when, at the very height of the storm's fury, Josef Tock suddenly sits up in bed and speaks coherently for the first and last time since his stroke.

mdd says: "New life for Koontz"
"MUCH BETTER! MR. Koontz is back"

This book was so much better than the Taking. Mr. Koontz is back. I haven't been able to stop listening. The reader is great and the plot engaging. Great fictional read (listen).

  • The Taking

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 25 mins)
    • By Dean Koontz
    • Narrated By Ari Meyers
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

On the morning that will mark the end of the world they have known, Molly and Neil Sloan awaken to the drumbeat of rain on their roof. It has haunted their sleep, invaded their dreams, and now they rise to find a luminous silvery downpour drenching their small California mountain town. A strange scent hangs faintly in the air, and the young couple cannot shake the sense of something wrong.

Jaimie says: "And the point was...?"
"I have a strong stomach, but this is creepy"

I'm about 1/2 through this book and decided to stop for the time being. It's putting me in a bad mood when I listen to it. I have a strong stomach and normally love suspence thrillers. The stranger the better. I can't put my finger on what it is, but IMHO this is not Mr. Koontz's best.

Because I love Mr. Koontz's books, I think I'll try it again a little later and see if I can't get a fresh prospective on it.

  • And Then You Die

    • ABRIDGED (6 hrs)
    • By Iris Johansen
    • Narrated By Megan Gallagher

Gregory J says: "Should have been better"
    "Eve Duncan renamed Bess Grady"

I started listening to this author's books with the Eve Duncan and Sarah Patrick series. I love Ms. Johansen's story ideas and character development, but find her writing skills lacking. She uses the same phrases ad nauseum (fill in the blank feeling surged through her and XYZ shrugged off her backpack) and she uses big words awkwardly where a simpler term is more appropriate. It reminds me of days in high school when I would try to use "fancy words" to make my writing sound older. I find the lead character, Bess Grady, in this book to be Eve Duncan renamed (or the other way around, I'm not sure which book was written first). IMHO, Ms. Johansen should use that wonderful knack for character development to do just that, develop another character. I'm about half way through the book and bored with the "anything you can do I can do better", head strong heroine who is arrogantly ignoring the CIA Operative who actually HAS experience escaping the bad guy.
