The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched firsthand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living - or at least the undead - hell of that dreadful time.

How this author took a done to death concept, mixed it up, and made it fresh & exciting I will never know. There is a reason they made a movie about this with one of the most popular actors on the planet in the lead - A BIG REASON! But good news if you have seen the movie there is lots more they did not film in here for you to listen to. Enjoy!

Before their extinction, dinosaurs dominated Earth's terrestrial habitats for about 160 million years. They present the ultimate puzzle in forensic science, but we have learned a great deal about them in the last 50 years. This lecture series will explain the evolutionary and ecological relationships among dinosaurs, what it might have been like to be present in their time, and the question of what ultimately brought about the total extinction of dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous Period.

I had no idea, honestly! I have fairly good grasp of the late Paleolithic up until today. I even have a fair grasp of the big bang to the formation of the solar system, plants and early life. But what about this middle bit. The missing bit. The bit about dinosaurs. Nope had no idea. Out with some cartoon imagery and basic names of dinosaurs from a child I knew nothing. Now I do. It is actually, ironically, the most interesting period, and the bridge.

I always scoffed at it as a time of some kind of irrelevant giant lizard birds and some crazy safari clad men going about digging up bones (fossils). Oh how wrong was I! It is so much more, it really is, and it is not irrelevant at all.

So if this is how you ended up here to find out about the mesolithic I can tell you this title is very enlightening while being concise and informative. A real find and contrast to the great courses perfectly practised more intensely academic style. I like that a great deal but this is more what a lecture hall is like actually in the real world. It is a bit more casual, a bit less scripted. Have a listen it will bring back your student days - but this time giant lizard birds are brought to life. ;) Enjoy!

Look beyond the abstract dates and figures, kings and queens, and battles and wars that make up so many historical accounts. Over the course of 48 richly detailed lectures, Professor Garland covers the breadth and depth of human history from the perspective of the so-called ordinary people, from its earliest beginnings through the Middle Ages.

This is curious; in fact very curious. You do not find much about normal life in taught history or in literature. Oh it is there, of course it is, to an extent, but it is not focused in on.

In this course the very idea of just normal boring life across our history is pulled together and presented in an such a delicate manner. I have to say it is so simple yet so moving and interesting considering how boring many would ascribe such a concept to be.

There is no great Generals, or great deeds, yet the lectures pull you in just as if there was. The lectures turn every day people, like us, into people as fascinating as great leaders by truly putting us in normal peoples shoes through a journey in time.

The lecturer is easy to listen to with such a nice flow because he really is excited about his course himself. You can hear this excitement and it carries.

Wonderful one of the more curious teaching company (great courses) or real life University courses I have experienced and I must have experienced 100's.

Highly recommended for those new to history and those experienced alike as the prospect either side of the coin in your educational journey will truly enlighten your grasp of history.

It sounds easy. But it is not. It takes practise. Cynical people will walk away declaring it a one idea book - and it is really. But it is not hocus pocus physico babble at all - it is real life. It is primal, it is how leaders are made and followers are strengthened in finding their best place. Humans need to learn to communicate better and build positive relationships to get things done and that is really what this books is about to the benefit of all parties. Practice these ideas and life improves in so many ways.

If you are in a chair all day, a bit older, carrying some health issues and thus cannot exercise much - here is your diet.

From the internationally bestselling author of No god but God comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history's most influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived: first-century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

For those who have a poor grasp of ancient history yes but a lot of this material, and it has to be pointed out, is well known and old trodden ground. There is many scholars who have published along these lines. It is not all that new. Then again how was he ever going to find new material. ^^ Don't be down hearted...read on...my review is not done!

What didn’t you like about Reza Aslan’s performance?

He is an author and a scholar not an actor. This is getting far to common on here with authors wishing to act out their works. It is not good; most of them cannot pull it off. It is not awful but it is hardly the way an actor would have went about it. It just could have been so much better with an actor! These authors miss the point that know body expects them to be an actor. Audible IS NOT a University lecture hall it is an entertainment experience - please stop allowing authors to do this.

    Any additional comments?

The best bit is the interpretation "is new" even if the old worn out material is not. Cross linking and context are superb - in fact exquisite. The author is a true scholar. I think I was a bit less impressed than others having already studied many historical accounts of Jesus. If you have not done this this book is a treat and well deserves its best seller status! I love the books title and it really catches the feel of the book well. Definitely a must have if you are in anyway interested in Jesus - get it now!

The most influential work of the entire Spanish literary canon and a founding work of modern Western literature, Don Quixote is also one of the greatest works ever written. Hugely entertaining but also moving at times, this episodic novel is built on the fantasy life of one Alonso Quixano, who lives with his niece and housekeeper in La Mancha. Quixano, obsessed by tales of knight errantry, renames himself ‘Don Quixote’ and with his faithful servant Sancho Panza, goes on a series of quests.

What made the experience of listening to Don Quixote the most enjoyable?

The production is just perfect even when you're chuckling away the narrator is stone cold. Just amazing and adds to the surreal mix that is Don Quixote!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Don Quixote?

When he charges the windmills I was cracking up. You have to listen to this part!

    Which scene was your favorite?

Actually the first scene when he names his horse - before you know about Don Quixote you will think eh what is going on here. This is worth a credit alone!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Don Quixote & Sancho Panza's dialogue when they find themselves in hopeless trouble of their own making can be very moving. It is hard to say without a spoiler.

    Any additional comments?

I left no spoilers as this is a classic and I hope others can enjoy it without spoilers (don't look it up just get it now - you will be surprised that is the key to really enjoying this). If I say to you Homer, Virgil, Dante, Shakespeare et al and you know who they are and have read them; that is the company I would place Miguel de Cervantes in. If that does not tempt you to listen in nothing will. Enjoy! A true masterpiece and an Audible Classic if there ever was one.

Between 1796 and 1815, the continent of Europe was held in thrall by one of the most remarkable personalities of modern times, a man whose name was on the lips of every man, woman, and child: Napoleon Bonaparte. Certainly, one would have to go back to the time of Charlemagne to find his equal on the field of battle, in the halls of diplomacy, or in the courts of jurisprudence.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I don't think anyone will like this it is just bad.

Have you listened to any of Charlton Griffin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Amazing - performance not in question the material is rubbish not the performance or production. Which is shame as most of Charlton Griffin's work is brilliant both in content and performance. Please look up his others work do not let this one bad egg put you off.

    Any additional comments?

Disappointing waste of a credit. This book is not up to Audible standards. It should be dropped as it is confusing and skips over so much about Napoleon. I am not the only one who found it very disappointing. To have this on an obscure book shelf is one thing but on Audible and produced in such a fine manner is just a shame as the content ruins the experience. Can't win them all but this is the first book in all my time with Audible that has made me disappointed as generally Audible only support THE BEST. I think the production sold it to Audible not the content and should be reviewed for removal before others waste credits.

What did you love best about The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich?

If you are into live news channels this is for you. It is not an in depth scholarly piece looking at individual elements, it is more like rolling news in Germany in WW2. It is fascinating as it is first hand; not by a scholar generations removed.Very few judgments are made, it is written as if it was being reported at the time by the reporter thus there is no time doing this to take sides (note the author was in NAZI Germany before/during/after WW2).

We know the horrors of WW2 too well but how many of us have listened to first hand experiences of WW2? Well this is the one. If that is what you are looking for you will enjoy this. The only caveat is that it is written in the way news is reported more than a scholarly piece - this makes it less detailed considerably but much more easily absorbed and at times "exciting" to listen to. For those amateur historians new to WW2 it is a great starting point. It won't make you an expert but you will have a very good grasp of all the most important events, perhaps not in great detail, but all of them certainly.
