I must admit that the narrator is excellent and obviously a great actor.
Aggravation, frustration and disappointment.
I really wanted to find out why it is that I've heard so many great things about Joyce but never really seen much of his work make it's way into any popular media. I think now it is because his style is so scattered and almost impossible to listen to or read. He can't seem to finish a single thought without wandering off on a tangent or singing a song or reciting a poem. I'm not even sure if there is an actual story in there and I'm a quarter of the way through the book. Really don't think I can listen to it anymore.
I've been an Irving fan for many years now but this book might be my last. There are some nice moments in this book but all the self indulgent dialog about writers dilemmas and the personal political rantings in the guise of a tough libertarian character are better left to an editorial page not literature. Of course he finds a way to slip in wrestling, a classic Irving subject that he has beaten into the ground. I can't believe he slipped in the Trade Center attack so that he could comment on it for pages? Please John, save it for the editorial page or your blog. I think we're seeing an author that has done his best work already and is now just putting out uninspired work. Hopefully there is another great novel in him but this isn't it
I read and listened to other versions of the same teachings and been inspired by them but this is a very bleak and matter of fact presentation of these ideas. If you are just learning about this way of thinking or being you should not start with this. I would look to Jon Kabat Zinn for a more realistic approach. I'm going out on a limb here but I feel that the Dali lama is so out of touch with the common man that it is difficult for him to present these ideas in a way that would appeal to the common man with everyday and current times struggle. His world is too far removed.
His choice of voices for many characters was bizarre. He uses this old crone for the beautiful Dragon Queen and other inappropriate voices for many others that are all similar. I would rather he not try to do the odd impersonations and just change his infliction where needed. Extremely annoying to listen to him.
This series has jumped the shark. I think Martin never really had a solid structure for it and is just writing a soap opera now.
