In Sins of the Fathers, Susan Howatch takes the reader into the world of the very rich, a family divided from generation to generation by a great fortune and the consequences of a terrible secret that lies at the very heart of their wealth.

What made the experience of listening to Sins of the Fathers the most enjoyable?

It was a little odd to listen to a British performer reading the parts of American characters, switching back and forth in accents, depending on whether he was delivering dialogue or narration, but I acclimated. Always too much ETOH in Howatch novels, which gets tiresome, but her storytelling is always enjoyable to me.

  • Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation: A 28-Day Program

Thousands of years prove it, and Western science backs it: Meditation sharpens focus. Meditation lowers blood pressure, relieves chronic pain, reduces stress. Meditation helps us experience greater calm. Meditation connects us to our inner-most feelings and challenges our habits of self-judgment. Meditation helps protect the brain against aging and improves our capacity for learning new things. Meditation opens the door to real and accessible happiness. There is no better person to show a beginner how to harness the power of meditation than Sharon Salzberg....

An excellent starter for someone wanting to explore meditation. It's probably the next best thing to attending a class, but because it is an "online class" so to speak, one wants to go through it all in one sitting, which isn't feasible. But I will reuse this again and again to help me get started and try to maintain a commitment to meditation. Her voice is gentle and calm, her pauses, at first surprising, are well timed. I enjoyed my time with Sharon.

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Admittedly. part of my reason for choosing this novel is curiosity. I wondered how Ms. Rowling would do after leaving Harry. I thought this novel got off to a slow start, but it built into a moving and involved plot, with good character development, particularly of the teenagers, as to conclude with great pathos and literary satisfaction.

I am a fan of the Church of England series. I did not read the novels in chronological order, but then went back and reread them chronologically, and took a more thorough involvement in the characters. Now, listening to the reader create his own version of the characters, it has given me a new view of them. Very enjoyable, very well done.

Ruth Cole is a complex, often self-contradictory character — a "difficult" woman. Her story is told in three parts, each focusing on a crucial time in her life. When we first meet her, Ruth is only four. The second window into Ruth's life opens when she is an unmarried woman whose personal life is not nearly as successful as her literary career. The novel closes in the autumn of 1995, when Ruth is a 41-year-old widow and mother — and about to fall in love for the first time.
