Five years ago his daughter, Rebecca, went missing on the eve of her 13th birthday. A year later the first card arrived: homemade, with a Polaroid picture stuck to the front – Rebecca, strapped to a chair, gagged and terrified. Every year another card: each one worse than the last. The tabloids call him The Birthday Boy. He’s been snatching girls for 12 years, always in the run-up to their 13th birthday, sending the families his homemade cards showing their daughters being slowly tortured to death.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who hates the main character.

What could Stuart MacBride have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

If MacBride didn't so obviously detest the main character of his own book, he might have provided an ending that wasn't so freakin depressing.

Which character – as performed by Ian Hanmore – was your favorite?

All of them. Ian Hanmore is amazing.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Birthdays for the Dead?

    The entire ending?

    Any additional comments?

I love Stuart MacBride. I appreciate his dark sense of humor. I like the way he tells stories and builds his characters. I like his characters so much, in fact, that the ending of this book really surprised me in a bad way. Was MacBride just in the mood to destroy something when he wrote this book? He seems to dislike the main character. A lot.

Crime Writers’ Association Cartier Diamond Dagger Award-winning author Val McDermid pens thrilling mysteries eagerly devoured by fans. In the sixth novel in her Tony Hill series—the inspiration for the hit British television show Wire in the Blood—psychologist Tony Hill and Detective Carol Jordan’s investigation of a teenage girl’s murder leads them to an Internet predator.

Would you try another book from Val McDermid and/or Gerard Doyle?

Val McDermid, yes. Gerard Doyle - If I had a choice between shoving a meat thermometer into my eardrum or listening to Gerard Doyle narrate another book, I would, without hesitation, choose the former.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fever of the Bone?

It's hard to say as I'm still trying to slog through the audio. I love the writer and this series, and this book is probably excellent. However, I just paid nearly $25 to listen to what is quite possibly the worst orator of all history.

Would you be willing to try another one of Gerard Doyle’s performances?

Offer me a paid vacation in Cyprus with my own personal pool boy and I would probably still refuse.

Was Fever of the Bone worth the listening time?

If... you don't mind.... listening... to someone... who speaks in monotone.... and always seems... as if they're not quite done with.... a sentence?

    Any additional comments?

I'm new to audible and find it quite amazingly expensive. I'm not thrilled about having paid $25 for a book I can barely stand to listen to. Considering cancelling my subscription.
