    Story

Amazing chronicle of a man who's love for American roots music fueled the movement we now know as rock and roll. Ertegun began as a collector of jazz and blues records to become one of the most influencial people in the record industry. Discovering acts like Ray Charles, Buffalo Springfield, Sonny & Cher and Led Zeppelin to name a few. As well as producers Phil Spector, David Geffin Tom Dowd and list just keeps going. Ahmet Ertegun seemed to be in the vicinity of just about every important event in popular music for over 50 years.

This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need to be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.

Honestly, I was leary of getting a contemporary version of the Bible, but when my pastor recommended The Message I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. Eugene Peterson does a great job of interpertating the Bible in a modern vernacular eith out "jazzin' up scripture" which was what I was worried about.
Its too bad the entire Message Bible isn't available on audible.

  • Free: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Mild-mannered Walter Mitty is a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. This well-known and beloved tale has launched its famous protagonist into the cultural lexicon, warranting his inclusion in English-language dictionaries and countless anthologies. Stiller's imaginative performance as Mitty is the perfect re-introduction to the classic character and a great preface to the upcoming film, for longtime fans and new listeners alike.

Well there's the movie with Danny Kaye and that's a classic. And there's the re-release with Ben Stiller which is a completely different take.
But we wouldn't have either one without this great short story by James Thurber. Well worth listening to; and for the price you can't beat it.

The definitive account of Louis Armstrong - his life and legacy - during the most creative period of his career. Thomas Brothers picks up where he left off with the acclaimed Louis Armstrong's New Orleans, following the story of the great jazz musician into his most creatively fertile years in the 1920s and early 1930s, when Armstrong created not one but two modern musical styles. Brothers wields tremendous skill in making the connections between history and music accessible to everyone.

Early in this book the author maks reference to an earlier work called Louis Armstongs New Orleans which deals with the period from 1900 to about 1922. Unfortunatly, this book is currently not available on audible. Master of Modernism covers Armstongs life and career from 1922 to the mid 1930s and while this volume absolutely stands on its own, it would be nice to have part one. There are also a number of references to CD tracks as if a cd was included in the print version but not the audio version. I don't know why these audio clips could'nt be included in the audio version
That being said I found this to be a great book and it would of real historical value to anyone who plays or just enjoys listening to Jazz.

Because no one will write an unauthorized biography about Emmy-winning actor and comedian Chris Elliott, he has done it himself. Listener, you’re hereby warned that much of this book will be disturbing. The Guy Under the Sheets is a behind-the-scenes memoir so personal, so provocative, that Elliott nearly sued himself to halt publication: The most shocking revelation, corroborated by numerous unnamed sources, is that Elliott is not the absurdist comedian that Rolling Stone once called "a genius". In fact, he’s a slightly dim-witted no-talent from a celebrity family.

When Chris Elliott's lifeless body was found in his home show business lost one of those rare creative geniuses that only comes around once in a generation. Elliott was a gifted writer and actor whose television show "get a life" and film "cabin boy" as well as his ground breaking work on the david letterman show shattered the myth that comedy had to be funny to be good.
Chris Elliott is the perfect choice for narrator for this one! And his Chris Elliott like delivery is flawless.

If Howard Kaylan had sung only one song, the Turtles' 1967 No. 1 smash hit "Happy Together," his place in rock-and-roll history would still be secure. But that recording, named in 1999 by BMI as one of the top 50 songs of the 20th century, with over five million radio plays, is only the tip of a rather eye-opening iceberg. For nearly five decades, Howard Kaylan has been a player in the rock-and-roll revolution.

This is THE best thing I've heard on audible to date!
Howard Kaylan (that's KaYlan, with a "y") narrates his quixotic journey through the music business which included being insulted by John Lennon, sharing a dinner with Jimi Hendrix, performing at the fateful Zappa show that spawned the song Smoke on the Water, and performing the Strawberry Shortcake theme just to name a few. It's all here.
The book is great and worth buying and reading as well, but to hear Howard Kaylan say the words out loud is the icing on the cake!
