"BIG DOWNER"
I can appreciate historical books about slavery—and hardships that the slaves went through----but while reading this I felt there was nothing redeeming about it. If I had been lead to believe that it was more of a historical account......I would have had different expectations. There is resolve at the end...…but it was like the end of the holocaust----what are people left with?--a shattered life? It was pretty awful. I compare it to the third book of the hunger games in the sense that you want to know what happens—but hearing all the events of how it got to the end is so awful, its better to get the cliff notes.
If you are interested in American history—or slavery in America, this would be a good read. The authors note at the end said that she did her research, and a lot of the stories were based on truth. It was pretty Depressing.
"Wonderful captivating story"
This book was very hard to get absorbed by at first because of the strange accents and performance . It easily could have done without the dramatic characters accents throughout. The person reading it did a great job of separating the different characters with her voice, but some of them were so unbearable and annoying that it took away from this great story. Overall it was entertaining and gives you that magical feeling of a period movie. It would make such a good film.
"dont waste your life reading this"
after reading "the heart of the matter" by Emily Giffin, i thought i would read some of her other titles. The heart of the matter was about redemption and forgiveness after an affair. But then i read "something Borrowed", and was sorely dissapointed. There were no virtuous or dignified characters in this book.
The narrator of the story is an idiotic woman that has an affair with her very best friends Fiance.Every character in this book is selfish, and self absorbed. If your looking for stories in this genre, i suggest you rent the series "sex and the city" it will be far more entertaining, and interesting with more insights. The book has many flaws---its not elequently written. Frankly---i dont see how any good can come of reading this. It encourages infidelity and glamorizes deceit. There is nothing good to take away---no insights, no happy feelings. By the art on the front cover, you would think this book is about something cute. and that its entertaining. I can assure you this book is mildly, if any amount, entertaining. Not worth the time or money to read this.
"heart warming historical fiction"
What a great read this is!! Was on my way to the caribbean when i heard the first paragraph. I Gripped my husbands arm and said "ooo-- this is gonna be a great book" . It sucked me right into it. You get seduced by the characters of this book---falling in love with each one. Abelene, Skeeter, Minnie--- completely transport you to that time period.
Every time i turned the book off after reading a chapter , I felt like i would waltz right into my 50's home with an apron on, and get right back to work.
Definately worth the money for the Audible version. The Voices make it so fun to listen to. Like your being entertained. YOU MUST READ THIS BEFORE SEEING THE MOVIE--when the book is over, youll wish you could read it all over again like it was the first time, And really savor it.
