It’s the early 1980s—the country is in a deep recession, and life after college is harder than ever. In the cafés on College Hill, the wised-up kids are inhaling Derrida and listening to Talking Heads. But Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major, is writing her senior thesis on Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at the heart of the greatest English novels.

The characters were interesting, and learning about views of literary analysis added to the story.

Anthony Powell's universally acclaimed epic encompasses a four-volume panorama of twentieth century London. Hailed by Time as "brilliant literary comedy as well as a brilliant sketch of the times," A Dance to the Music of Time opens just after World War I. Amid the fever of the 1920s and the first chill of the 1930s, Nick Jenkins and his friends confront sex, society, business, and art.

From the author of The Power of One comes an inspiring human drama of three lives brought together and changed forever by the extraordinary events of recent history. Inspired by real events, Bryce Courtenay's new novel tells the story of three people from vastly differing backgrounds. All they have in common is a tough beginning in life.

I discovered Bryce Courtnay through Audible and have now listed both to The Persimmon Tree and Brother Fish. Both are excellent stories with memorable characters. In Brother Fish I learned more about the Korean War than I had known previously.

There were excellent scenes that were done well, but the book is overlong. Keeping up with the Japanese names was difficult.

The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold is a semi-autobiographical story, which tells of the mental breakdown of an ageing writer. Gilbert Pinfold takes a cruise to try to rebuild his shattered life, but what should his life be, and is he important to the world, anyway?

    Story
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book was a type of British humor I found uninteresting.

What was most disappointing about Evelyn Waugh’s story?

The main character was not in a muddle, and unfortunately I as listener did not care.

What about Michael Cochrane’s performance did you like?

He performed well, but the story did not hold together.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not that I can think of.
