I love the Chronicles of Barsetshire, and Simon Vance is the perfect reader for them. I have listened to The Warden (a very good book), Barchester Towers (one of the best books of all time), and I am currently about half way through Dr. Thorne.
In The Warden, it was great listening again to Trollope's description of the press - and the politicians - as his insights are all still relevant today. It is, perhaps, a pity that they sound so fresh, but at the same time - it makes one ponder the fact that we are more often led by reporters, rather than educated by them.
What a great book!
The Warden Harding is a man of incredible ethics, and in today's world of ethical rationalizations, he sounds weak.
No one is better to take you on a visit back to through Trollope's classics than Simon Vance. This reading is everything I would expect from Simon - in fact, I decided to re-visit this series when I discovered that Simon Vance was reading it.
Colin Firth stands, with Simon Vance, at the top of my narrators' queue.
I will not describe the plot - as any description would act as a spoiler - but this is Robert Goddard and Michael Kitchen at their best. I listen to books while walking each morning - and listening to this one pushed me an extra mile or two each day. Couldn't wait to get going - and hated setting the headset aside.
I'm listening to the Inspector Banks series while walking six miles each morning, and I find this a fantastic incentive to get me out the door. This one pushed me an extra mile as I neared the finish. Would definitely listen again on some future walk.
Banks is the all time favorite.
Good voice - nothing overdone or dramatic, and clearly spoken.
That would be a spoiler.....
The series is great for the genre and, so far, consistently good. I definitely recommend it for creative listening.
Middlemarch is among my top ten novels, and Gabriel Woolf is among my top ten narrators. It is like being read to by a man sitting next to you, a man who can subtly change his voice to as characters enter and leave the stage. Loved it!!
