First Thought When Finished: The Nerdist Way was a humorous self-help book with some really great ideas! Nothing new but the presentation really worked!

Good To Know Thoughts: I will admit that self-help books are kind of my guilty pleasure. I am also a total geek and a big fan of all things nerdom. Here is the deal, if you read any kind of self-improvement books you know they are not really telling you anything new. Presentation is the key to getting some of the messages to stick. The Nerdist Way takes the humorous and direct way of getting the messages across. There is cursing, examples in relation to Dungeons and Dragons, and some very frank “just get it done” speak. Chris didn’t use fancy terms (though he made up a few of his own) and really speaks directly to the target audience: the geeks and nerds of the world. There really is some great advice in here and the activities will help reinforce some good behavior. If you are looking something new and earth-shattering this is not the book. If you are looking for something straight-forward, fun, and sometimes self eye-opening then this will work for you.

NOTE: You must understand Geek/Nerd culture to get some of the references. Then again, I doubt you would look at this book if you didn’t.

Knowledge Manager Thoughts: Why did I call Chris or any other self-help book author a Knowledge Manager? That is what they are! If you are a going to write a self-help book than you had better be able to manage that knowledge. Chris practices (from what I can tell) what he talks about. He uses some real life experience to reinforce the ideas that he suggests that we incorporate into our lives. His humor, bluntness, and fun attitude do come across in The Nerdist Way. Fans of his won’t be disappointed on that scale. I found him to be real and relatable which always helps when taking advice from someone. Overall, he was a great person to send this particular message.

    Audio Thoughts:

    Narrated by Chris Hardwick/Running Time 6h 10m

Non-Fiction read by the author is always better than using another narrator. The belief and feeling they have their subject matter is always apparent. Chris did a fantastic job with the narration, pacing, and adding emotion into the written word. I highly recommend this on audio.

Final Thoughts: The Nerdist Way exceeded my expectations and dare I say, I had fun listening to a self-help book. Great read for the Nerd/Geeks of the world.

Read It File It (short review): The Wicked Deeds of Daniel Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley has one of my favorite romance troupes: Man falls in love with woman because she creates things (mathematical or engineering)that impress him. This is especially true in Historicals where women were mostly trained to not show their smarts. I fell in love with Daniel awhile ago and loved seeing the "nosey" Mackenzie women. I do believe that Violet will fit right in :)

A few more thoughts but they are spoiler in nature:

[There is a troupe in this one that might not work for everyone but if you are a fan of the Mackenzie series then you know that at least one person in every couple is damaged. In this case, it is Violet. You may not like that she is a con-artist but she very much has her reasons. They are valid and I had no problem with her profession. However, it is something to note if you have a problem with dishonesty in a character. (hide spoiler)]

I am an Angela Dawe fangirl (I think y'all know that by now)! She totally nailed Violet and Daniel. Even though I read most of this book (I was out and about without my audiobooks), I made sure to listen to a couple of hours! I wish I could have spent the whole time with the audiobook!

First Thought when Finished: Loved the story in Poison Promise by Jennifer Estep but Bria needs to get over it already! Either accept your sister or move on.

Story Thoughts:There was a whole lot of kicking ass in Poison Promise and I liked it. Drug King needed taking down: Gin's got it taking care of. New characters in the fold that could go either way: Gin's got that too. A whole lot of twists, turns, and snark: Gin can handle it. It was just another great adventure for Gin and crew!

Character Thoughts: Let me be specific: every character was downright awesome except Bria. Seriously, I know it sucks that you are a cop and your sister is an assassin. Also, it sucks that she knows it is better for her to do things her way than you. JUST SUCK IT UP ALREADY. Can you tell she annoyed me a bit (or a lot) in Poison Promise? :)

Story Thoughts:First let me say this: The story did not suck. I have super high expectations cause Diana pretty much knocks it out of the park all the time. This time it just felt like I was waiting the whole book for something to happen and then felt more like it was a lead-in to the next book. Not that it is a bad thing but it just doesn't rank as my favorite in the series.

Character Thoughts: Same kick ass characters, Same kick ass time! In fact, there were a few characters that I started to like a bit more than I had previously. BIG plus resolution of that relationship I don't like. However, I think we are circling back but I hope I am wrong--they make better friends.

First Thought when Finished: Fall of Night by Jonathan Maberry has given me PABD (Post Awesome Book Depression)!

Story Thoughts: You know when a book just has you on edge THE ENTIRE TIME? Well that is me with this series. Even though I ultimately know where it is going because I have read most of the Rot and Ruin series. The path is still emotionally gutting. From seeing characters that I have heard about in the other series (Ledger and Imura) to the characters I already cared about from Dead of Night, I just care about everything they go through. This story made me cheer, cry, and cuss Jonathan Maberry just a little bit. When the last minute ticked away, I pretty much just sat there thinking: I am just not sure what I can follow this up with!

Character Thoughts: These aren't your typical "lovable" characters but dammit I loved all of them. I just wanted to find them a safe place to go. I loved their passion, stamina, and will to live. I loved the chances that they took. The people that they mourned (because it is a zombie book y'all--people die). The love that they still managed to have! I particularly loved all their batshit crazy moments--though Dez just gotta say that taking a bath in steak sauce is not on my Zombie Apocalypse plan *snort*. Each character was unique and brilliantly written.

    Audio Thoughts:

Narrated by: William Dufris /Length: 15 hrs and 2 mins

Holy crap William Dufris was excellent. This makes me want to go back and listen to the first one which I originally read. His pacing, accents, emotion, and urgency were just the right pace for this story. I will definitely listen to him again in the future!

Final Thoughts: PABD--I will try to fight through!

NOTE: PABD was stolen (with permission) from Tara from 25 Hour Books. It stands for Post Awesome Book Depression when you are just not sure what to read after because this book was so awesome. I will soldier through but I am going to completely change genres. It is the only solution!

First Thought when Finished: I loved Lisette and Zach in Night Unbound by Dianne Duvall!

Story Thoughts: Going to admit that I love the romance part of Night Unbound. It was refreshing that words like love and support were early (for romance) to raise their hand in this story. It made me fall in love with the romance more than I expected too. As for the forwarding of the overall arc of the series. I felt this was a bit of filler novel but important filler. A lot happened but we only moved forward a bit. That being said, at no point was I bored during listening to the story. It was well worth the time.

Character Thoughts: Second admission: I liked Lisette in the previous books but I wasn't sure I could handle her as the lead in a full-length novel. I was wrong. In fact, it was a little frustrating when the story wasn't about her and Zach. I loved them together. Zach has always been swoon-worthy to me. He is one of those broken but healing characters I love to love. However, falling in love with them as a couple stunned but pleased me.

Not writing spoilers but why you can't skip this: Two very important pieces of information come out during this book. Also if we don't find a way to save Cliff I am going to cry (that isn't a spoiler as he is infected but I say this every book since Bastian).

    Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Kirsten Potter / Length: 13 hrs and 21 mins

This is a series that I will only listen to on audio. Kirsten + Dianne = great author/narrator pairing. Kirsten outdid herself this time--her numerous accents were dead on!

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. ReRead Thoughts: I am not sure that I ever wrote an original review for Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. My physical copy has lots of notes in it: Loved Jamie (who doesn't), intrigued by Frank (most people aren't), hate Black Jack (you are supposed too), and secretly want to give Dougal a hug (I am not sure why I wanted to do that but on the reread I felt the same way--guy is not lucky in love). I also wrote this on the cover: LOVED IT because it is a time-travel story with a bit romance not a romance with a bit of time-travel.

How do I feel now? Pretty much the same about all of it. I have always liked that even though the romance between Jamie and Claire is what we talk about the most--it really isn't the main focus of the story. This is Claire's time-travel adventure. Her bumps, triumphs, and adjustments to living "out of time". Her decisions through out the story and what the impacts of those decisions have on history and Claire herself. Jamie is just a nice bonus and yes I still like Frank! Claire is a lucky girl!

    Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Davina Porter / Length: 33 hrs and 8 mins

Even though this time I didn't listen to the audiobook, I have listened to this audiobook 3 times previously. Davina tackles all 33 hours of this story with great pacing, tone, and delivery. Very few narrators can pull off epic tomes of storytelling but Davina is one of them!

Thorne stepping up to "pretend" to be Kate's fiance while they figured out if her new found family was legit was fun, interesting, and intriguing. I loved Thorne's back story. All around another great entry in the series.

First Thought when Finished: Holy Joe Ledger! The King of Plagues by Jonathan Maberry was packed with action and intrigue.

Overall Thoughts: (Quick Review) The King of Plagues was a little bit detective work and whole lot of kick ass Joe Ledger. OMG Jonathan can write a thriller. Even though I know this always has levels of Fringe, to me these are hands down some of the best thrillers on the market. Joe is a detective with some very special skills. His best one though is following a lead and deducting where the clues will take him. Sure he can kick ass, has an awesome dog, and has a highly trained team helping him but Joe is just brilliant. This story combines the very real (and timely in this case) threat of madmen trying to take over the world.

I want to add a quick note about the kick-ass women that Jonathan writes in this series. He never pigeon-holes them or makes them "eye candy". They are generally smart (book and street), diabolical (if that is their role), and just as important to the team as the guys. Thank you for the Mr. Maberry!

This is one of those series that initially I didn't like on Audio. I admit that Ray didn't blow me away in book 1. However, now I can't see anyone else being Joe. His deliverance and pacing is perfect for Jonathan's writing.

First Thought when Finished: Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion was quirky & fun!

Story Thoughts: This is one of those books that I have started and stopped probably a dozen times. That would make it seem like I didn't like it but that wasn't the case. I think you have to be in the mood for this kind of fun quirkiness. It is one of those books you aren't supposed to take too seriously and just have fun with. Once my mood matched my random pick up of the book it clicked! It was also a breeze to read. There are lots of pop culture references that I think "dates" the book a little but most people should be able to get them. In fact, I think they added to the fun just a bit.

Character Thoughts: The lead characters of Warm Bodies (R & Julie) were both a little "stale" (for lack of a better word) to me but they were sweet together. I was actually more interested in M. He was the "heart" of this story I believe. He was the one that stuck with me long after the story was over. I know though that most loved R and I can see the appeal. I think he was right for Julie and that is all that matters.

    Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Kevin Kenerly / Length: 8 hrs and 4 mins

I don't even know really how to say this: Kevin nailed the narration but this isn't really a book I enjoyed on audio. I think this goes back to how I thought the characters were a little "stale". I don't think that translates well on audio. In this case, I KNOW I am in the minority. Most people that listened to the audiobook raved about it. I did think Kevin absolutely nailed the pace, tone, and characters of the story. In that essence he was brilliant! It just didn't work for me.

Final Thoughts: I thought Warm Bodies was a fun light read that fit my quirky mood at the time.

*This review really tested my story retaining skills--I read it in April and didn't write this till September*
