Captain John "Black Jack" Geary's legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic "last stand" in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics.

Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance's one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic "Black Jack" legend.

I really enjoyed this series, and I'm just an "average Joe" with no real knowledge of the military expect for what I've picked up from Hollywood. This entire series was really great (at least the action part of it was, the author threw in some "romance" that was a little too cheesy for my tastes, but that was kept out of the forefront). The space battles are very descriptive and believable. I only wish the books had been longer so I wouldn't have had to spend so many credits on the entire series, but all in all, I'd say this is very worth buying.

The narration is fine but his female voices are a little irritating after a while. The nice thing is that he is very clear and each character has his own distinctive voice so it is easy to tell them apart -- but then again, there aren't that many characters in the first place to keep track of.
