I buy a ton of books on Audible, but this one can be read in five minutes on the internet. Don't waste your money :(
The book itself was good but predictable. BUT the narrator was awful. I thought I was hearing things wrong, but her accent was very Eastern US. She dropped her "r's" and pronounced other words with a noticeable Boston or Jersey accent. It was very distracting. I have no idea why she was hired when there are so many narrators around who have "no" accent.
I enjoyed the first part of this book which dealt with early discoveries and work. I thought it would continue to be interesting but when it got to the discussion of AIDS, it just dragged. I was under the impression from reading the description there would be more about ebola, etc. but more than half the book deals with AIDS. It's not interesting as those of us who enjoy or work in the field already know the information. I would not recommend this book based on the description.
Ugh. I like David Sedaris but this was slow, boring and I couldn't even finish the first story. Sedaris' narration was monotone - without any expression. Don't waste your money. I can't see how anyone gave this more than three stars - and you would have to be a big fan at that.
I tried to make it past two hours of this book but decided the undercurrent of political judgments made toward various administrations was keeping me from thinking about the content - and it turned out that was not worth it anyway. From the beginning the narrator does little to tone done his voice, showing what I would only characterize as disgust with some politicians and their decisions. It was apparent facts were not an issue. I did not think the content was described correctly and the narration was horrible.
I read numerous reviews of this book of short stories before I got it. They said it was urbane, witty, satirical, funny and imaginative. I gave up after the first two stories. Granted, I don't usually read short stories as I like to get more invested in the characters. The first story - especially the ending - made me say to myself "What the heck just happened?" and the second story about gamers had an ending that made little sense. I am sure there are others who may appreciate Lipsyte's style, but I am not a fan.
This book is very detailed about fire jumping and the people who work in that profession. Forget the romance if you don't like that (I don't either). The story is absorbing and you will actually learn from Robert's fiction. I like it when I can get more out of a book than the plot itself. My crabby husband loved it!
This book was on a lot of "Best Books Of the Year" lists, so I thought I would give it a try and I was not disappointed. The first time I tried to listen I cut it off after a half hour, but stick with it!!! It is a quirky, character driven, wonderful book and you will love the narrator. Best Buy!
I love Taylor Stevens and am looking forward to the next book with great anticipation. Terrific character development and wonderful reading. Buy it!!!
I wanted to like this but gave up after about an hour. Get it from a friend or your library instead unless you are a die hard fan.
Just do yourself a favor and buy ALL the Vince Flynn/Mitch Rapp books in order and listen to them that way. Great reading and suburb action. Among my favorites of all time - and I read and blog on many books.
