On the eve of her ninth birthday, unassuming Rose Edelstein, a girl at the periphery of schoolyard games and her distracted parents' attention, bites into her mother's homemade lemon-chocolate cake and discovers she has a magical gift: she can taste her mother's emotions in the cake. She discovers this gift to her horror, for her mother - her cheerful, good-with-crafts, can-do mother - tastes of despair and desperation.

    "ridiculous"

It's amazing to me that this got so many good reviews. The premise is absolutely ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I am happy to suspend disbelief and entertain fanciful notions if they have some point. What was the point here? A family with strange and pointless special abilities? It goes nowhere.

Anderson Lake is a company man, AgriGen's Calorie Man in Thailand. Under cover as a factory manager, Anderson combs Bangkok's street markets in search of foodstuffs thought to be extinct, hoping to reap the bounty of history's lost calories. There, he encounters Emiko...Emiko is the Windup Girl, a strange and beautiful creature. One of the New People, Emiko is not human; instead, she is an engineered being, creche-grown and programmed to satisfy the decadent whims of a Kyoto businessman.

I just couldn't listen any more. It was just too exhausting. Interesting for awhile but it just took too long to unfold.
