  • A Prayer for Owen Meany

    • UNABRIDGED (27 hrs and 20 mins)

    • Narrated By Joe Barrett

Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

I downloaded this book because of the great ratings. I couldn't finish it. It just droned on and on. I found Owen to be an annoying character in voice and personality. Maybe it gets better towards the end??

Meet Peter Brown, a young Manhattan emergency room doctor with an unusual past that is just about to catch up with him. His morning begins with the quick disarming of a would-be mugger, followed by a steamy elevator encounter with a sexy young pharmaceutical rep, topped off by a visit with a new patient - and from there Peter's day is going to get a whole lot worse and a whole lot weirder.

Short. Fun while it lasted. Pretty over the top though.

Considered by some to be the world's greatest novel, Anna Karenina contains two plots: the tragedy of Madame Karenina, in love with a man who is not her husband; and the story of Konstantine Levin, a sensitive man whose personal philosophy is Tolstoy's reason for writing about him.

    D. Littman says: "A classic, classically read"
    "I couldn't get through it"

I guess I'm not one that can appreciate great writing. I found the book tedious. I couldn't finish it.

I can't believe I listened to the whole thing! I bought based on the Stephen King review. There must not have been any customer reviews when I ordered. I agree with all the other one star reviews. Big waste of time and credits!
