Born and raised in a poor, working-class family in Toronto, Jack Spayd is the son of an unhappy marriage. After being taken under the wing of "Miss Frostbite", the owner of a local jazz club, Jack becomes a gifted musician, playing piano and harmonica. Fame and the allure of gambling takes him to Vegas, and prospects of fortune take him to the Belgian Congo, where he's heard it's possible to earn big money working in the most dangerous parts of the local copper mines.

    Any additional comments?

It was the best of times and the worst of times. This tale is a bit Dickensian - a coming of age tale with a very cheerful and fulfilling ending. Jack of Diamonds is Courtenay at his best - an excellent blend of social history, character development and pure adventure. I'm now keen to learn poker.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des RĂªves, and it is only open at night.

Would you try another book from Erin Morgenstern and/or Jim Dale?

    No

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The concept is compelling, but the execution is poor. First, the narrative shift between dates/time/characters is confusing and weakens the momentum, especially the audio version as it's too difficult to remember where you left off. It also fails to flesh out key characters, of whom none prove to be fully developed and engaging (ie. I didn't really care at the end about any of them). I'd skip this one unless it's a $4.95 deal - and even then it's still a huge time commitment.

Could you see The Night Circus being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

This would be an excellent film because it's so visual - so maybe it would translate better on screen.

  • Day by Day Armageddon: Beyond Exile

The first book of Day by Day Armageddon took us deep into the mind of a military officer and survivor as he made a New Year's resolution to start keeping a journal. The man kept his resolution and brought to us the fall of humanity, day by day. We see the man transition from the life that you and I live to the prospect of fighting for his very survival against the overwhelming hordes of the dead. We see him bleed, we see him make mistakes, we witness him evolve.

If you want a step by step instruction manual for navigating the demise of humanity due to a zombie invasion, then this is a must-listen. Or, if you, like me, want to drift off to sleep while listening, then download this sleeper.
However, ff you actually enjoying character development - "why oh why did this happen? Why am I still here? Where's God? How can I go on?" - intrigue, mystery, language, and masterful storytelling, you'll want to skip this. It's not even a decent zombie thriller. For that - check out Patient Zero.
