  • Snuff: Discworld, Book 39

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 29 mins)
    • By Terry Pratchett
    • Narrated By Stephen Briggs

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse. And Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is on holiday in the pleasant and innocent countryside, but not for him a mere body in the wardrobe. There are many, many bodies and an ancient crime more terrible than murder. He is out of his jurisdiction, out of his depth, out of bacon sandwiches, and occasionally snookered and out of his mind, but never out of guile. They say that in the end all sins are forgiven.

phillip says: "An eye popper of a title to google - "Snuff"!"
    "One of Pratchett's Finest"
Would you consider the audio edition of Snuff: Discworld, Book 39 to be better than the print version?

Not quite, but then your imagination is always the most powerful thing. But it is a superb reading as always

What was one of the most memorable moments of Snuff: Discworld, Book 39?

Willikins is undoubtedly the star of this novel

Have you listened to any of Stephen Briggs’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Mr Briggs is a very fine narrator and he once again doesn't disappoint

    Any additional comments?

Long time Pratchett fan and I do consider Snuff to be one of his finest novels in the discworld series

  • Ruling Passion

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 33 mins)
    • By Reginald Hill
    • Narrated By Brian Glover

Peter Pascoe is in shock. A weekend in the country with old friends turns into a nightmare when he finds three of them dead and the missing fourth a prime suspect in the eyes of the local police. They want his cooperation. Superintendent Andy Dalziel wants him back in Yorkshire where a string of unsolved burglaries are turning nasty. But it is all getting too much for Pascoe?

    Kathy says: "Good Grief !!"
"Great Story - but awful narration"
What didn’t you like about Brian Glover’s performance?

He's a very monotone reader, and whilst undoubtedly a fine actor, this is not his forte

    Any additional comments?

Thankfull the story is up to Mr Hills usual quality, but I won't be getting anymore narrated by Mr Glover

  • The Lost Symbol

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Dan Brown
    • Narrated By Paul Michael
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to deliver an evening lecture in the U.S. Capitol Building. Within minutes of his arrival, the night takes a bizarre turn. A disturbing object is discovered in the Capitol Building. The object is an ancient invitation, meant to usher its recipient into a long-lost world of hidden esoteric wisdom. And when Langdon's mentor is kidnapped, Langdon's only hope of saving him is to accept this invitation and follow wherever it leads him.

tess says: "Very typical of Dan Brown. Easy brilliance."
"Why did I do this to myself?"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Having it been written by a different author

Has The Lost Symbol turned you off from other books in this genre?

Only if I see the name Dan Brown as the author.

What about Paul Michael’s performance did you like?

He imbued emotion and read well, with clarity and didn't just use a dull plodding monotone, would happily listen to him as a reader again.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not really, it was pretty much utter bilge from start to finish. The only redeeming quality is that I didn't pay full price for my misery!

    Any additional comments?

I wish that I had just read this book instead of listened to it, as it would have been over in a far shorter time.

To be honest I am not entirely sure why I bothered with it in the first place, it was either idle curiosity or masochistic tendencies...or most likely both!

Any book which has you expleting audibly in exhasperation more then once (even just once would be bad enough) really cannot be recommended.

  • Jennings' Diary

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By Anthony Buckeridge
    • Narrated By Simon Vance

"Hah-ooh cinosrepus! ‘Selbanev, Nosnikta, Senoj-Nitram,’ said Jennings. ‘They’re the names of people, I bet you can’t guess who!’ ‘Russian agents? - Zulu tribesmen? - Ancient kings of Egypt?’ hazarded Darbishire. ‘No, no, no,’ Jennings flipped his fingers in delight and danced ungainly ballet steps round the tuck-boxes. ‘Oh, wacko! If you can’t guess, neither will anybody else, so we can use it for the code.’”

    Jason says: "Disappointing"
What would have made Jennings' Diary better?

Better proof reading of the manuscript. At one point Mr Wilkins is called Mr Jennings. Jennings becomes Jenkins, and 80p becomes half a crown and then becomes 80p again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jennings and Derbyshire themselves are always entertaining

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Simon Vance?

He needs to cheer up, the problem was he read it like it was a James Bond novel not a tale of 2 school chums.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment, I grew up reading Jennings and this reading was just so flawed in so many ways,
