Great book and I thought Hitchens narration made it even better. Those that say Hitchens should not have narrated his own book have it wrong. This book is written in typical Christopher Hitchens speak. Anyone else narrating it just wouldn't have been right as they broke the mold after Hitchens was born! LOL
You do not have to be an atheist to enjoy the book. Just gives you another perspective. A+++
If you love Conquistador history as I do start out with this book as it is a good primer on the subject. Then follow it with 'Conquistador' by Buddy Levy and 'The Last Days of the Incas' by Kim MacQuarrie. Both books can be found on Audible.com and go into much more depth. After that go on Amazon and pick up the hard copy of 'Fernando Cortes His Five Letters of Relation to the Emperor Charles V'. This is a two volume set that are the actual dispatches from Cortes to the King. I picked my copy up for $20. Lastly read the 641page 'The Conquest of the Incas' by John Hemming available in hardcover and paperback cheap from lots of used book sellers... just do a search.
I loved the book and gave it four stars and gave the narrator five stars (he was excellent). I probably would have given the book five stars if Audible had the unabridged version.
Off to listen to Charles Mann's unabridged '1493' now.
This book is about the Third Reichs last days and Cornelius Ryan the author captures the moment brilliantly. I highly recommend this book ... oh ya then throw in Simon Vance, one of the best narrators on Audible and you end up with a five star audio book!
My kid was born in 1984... he hated me cause I never bought 'snacks' and the sodas and sweets around the house were rare. Well here he is 29yrs old and me in my late 50's - both thin and pretty... damn I wish I beat this guy to writing Salt Sugar Fat... LOL
I loved listening to this book. Being in my mid 50's I always heard from my parents what a dope Truman was. WRONG! Truman was actually a pretty good President and as honest as they come. The USA was lucky to have him. Fantastic narration as well and the story flows as only McCullough can do. A+++ IMHO
Fareed Zakaria explains his view of a Post American World with a no nonsense common sense approach. No bias to either political party. A plus is Fareed is the narrator. A+++
I can't believe this book was only $5.95 on Audible. It was one of the best non fiction books I have ever listened to. Fred Pearce the author must have spent ten years researching this book as he visited most of the places he talked about in the book from India to Lybia. Tony Craine the narrator is excellent and I wish he was the narrator of every book I downloaded from Audible - he is that good. This is an easy 5 STARS.
Most people do not have the slightest idea what goes on in modern day Siberia but after traveling along with Ian Frazier you will. An added plus is the author is also the narrator and I am not sure this book would have worked if he wasn't the narrator. This is your typical travel book but Frazier adds pizzaz which made me stick with the book from beginning to end.
This is a great read (listen). The Narrator, besides being excellent sounds exactly like Churchill!!! Winston Churchill was a master wordsmith so combine the great narration with one of the best authors in history and you have a 5 star book. History buffs this is a must... can't wait to listen to Book #2 "Alone".
