Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin. Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction.

I never thought I would like or could 'relate' to historical fiction, but I loved the characters in this book. The narration was great, the pace was perfect, and I wanted the book to go on longer than it did. Well done!

Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Would you consider the audio edition of Sycamore Row to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version so I have no way of knowing. The audiobook was excellent.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sycamore Row?

Certainly hearing what was on the videotaped deposition was excellent.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed when the 'children' were in the house right before the funeral and Letty was listening to them no matter where they went.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"You never know when the past will be repaid"

    Any additional comments?

It's just nice to have classic John Grisham back. This was definitely one of those books that made me drive extra distances so I could keep listening!

When recently widowed Maggie McElroy is called to China to settle a claim against her late husbands estate, she is blindsided by the discovery that he may have led a double life. Since work is all that will keep her sane, her magazine editor assigns her to profile Sam, a half-Chinese American who is the last in a line of gifted chefs tracing back to the imperial palace. As she watches Sam gear up for Chinas Olympic culinary competition by planning the banquet of a lifetime, she begins to see past the cuisines artistry to glimpse its coherent expression of Chinese civilization.

If you could sum up The Last Chinese Chef in three words, what would they be?

Part history, part food love story, and part relationship - it was a fascinating voyage to a place I've never been before.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The food was my favorite character - the explanations and descriptions made it come alive and brought all the ancient principles to life.

    Any additional comments?

It made me hungry - very hungry for Chinese food. The food I ordered had no resemblance to the masterpieces Sam made. I'm still hungry.

After a tragically short life as a stray mutt, Bailey is surprised to find himself reborn as a rambunctious golden-haired puppy. But this life as a beloved family pet is not the end of Bailey's journey. Reborn as a puppy yet again, Bailey wonders, will he ever find his purpose?

    Overall

I listen to books in my car, and it is a rare one that has me driving around the block because I don't want to stop listening. This was certainly one of them. A wonderful story, and the subtle imagined insights into a dog's mind were clever and thought provoking. No wonder my dogs wag extra hard when I call them "good dogs". There were times I certainly had to pull over because of tears in my eyes, but when I finally did get home it was with just a little extra love and appreciation for my own canine friends. A super book, even if you're not a dog person.

First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

Nicole says: "You love it or you hate it..."
    "Need a Roadmap!"
    Overall

I loved the post-apocalyptic parts of this book, and some of the interpersonal relationships were pretty good also. The idea of a virus, even one carried by vampires is okay, but all the paranormal stuff was a little over the top.
Meanwhile, there were so many different parts of the book and different people going in all directions that I would have liked a cheat sheet so I could keep track of everything. I definitely didn't understand the point of giving us long introductions to characters, only to have them die shortly afterward.

That being said, I thought the narration was great. The pretty abrupt ending certainly leaves room for another volume, and I'll definitely be listening to it when it arrives.
