What do you do? Whenever people asked him, Eric Cash used to have a dozen answers. Artist, actor, screenwriter...But now he's 35 years old and he's still living downtown, still in the restaurant business, working night shifts and serving the people he always wanted to be. What does Eric do? He manages.

    Stephen McLeod says: "Brilliant"
    "A wonderful listen"
    Overall

I read the review in the Times, which described the book as having terrific dialog. It seemed to me that such a book would be particularly good to listen to. For those of you that are withdrawing from The Wire -- this book will do it. It is gritty and realistic, and the narration is wonderful.

Fleur Savagar is the most beautiful woman in the world . . . to everyone but herself. With her oversized hands and paddle-boat feet, her streaky blond hair and funny green eyes, she lives a life filled with secrets that began before she was born. That was when her bewitching mother left home to find James Dean and met Errol Flynn instead. Now Fleur has to grow up quickly, and life won't make that easy.

    Theresa says: "Another SEP Winner"
"Good Book - not crazy about narration"
    Overall

I have recently discovered SEP and have listened to or read most of the books. I enjoyed the book - unfortunately, Anna Fields did not get to narrate this book before she died. I listened to part of it, and then finished the book in written form.

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Scott says: "Epic Drama & Love Story through Time Travel"
    "I should have paid attention"
    Overall

to the reviewers who couldn't finish the book. The premise is creative - but after the first hour - enough!

In the opening pages of Jamie Ford's stunning debut, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

Christopher says: "Hotel on the corner of bitter and sweet"
    "A Beautiful Listen"
    Overall

This is a wonderfully written book that is beautifully narrated. The story is written with an Asian voice, and takes one back to the Pacific Northwest during World War II, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor made Japanese Americans and Japanese immigrants treated as enemies. This is a gentle love story between a Japanese American girl and a Chinese American boy who must not only brave the difficulties of being Asian in a hostile Caucasian society, but the hostility and distrust between the Chinese and Japanese communities. Couldn't put it down.

At last: The international best seller - which has already sold nearly 2 million copies worldwide - comes to America! Cathedral of the Sea follows the fortunes of the Estanyol family, from their peasant roots to a son, Arnau, who flees the land only to realize spectacular wealth and devastating problems.

Joseph says: "Very good historical novel."
    "Couldn't finish it"
    Overall

I love long epic novels. Although this was well narrated, it was rather simple with little character development. Does not compare at all to the Follett Cathedral novels. Doesn't come close to any of the Bryce Courtenay novels. After several hours, I just didn't feel it was worth my time.
