I have been following this series with hope. This installment reminds me of why I love Hobb's books. Excellent writing- great resolutions, significant progress in the story.
If you have enjoyed other series by Hobb, you will like this installment. In my opinion, it accomplished a lot more than earlier installments.
This book is just honest to goodness fun.
It reminds me of such fun and delicious - can you say delicious when it's a book? - books as "Old Man's War," and "Ready Player One," Its the story of a guy who discovers an interesting thing about our world and exploit it to his everlasting happiness, joy, and a kind of paradise - it is escapism at its most fun. You lose yourself for a few delightful hours in a mixture of technology and magic(?) or is it simply just technology and more technology? Anyway, you lose yourself in wonderful imaginings. Then, unfortunately, you have to wake up and wait for the next installment!
I loved this series.
Young man awakening to his powers without a teacher. Finds various learning opportunities along the way, coming to discover he is probably the most powerful person of his kind ever born (although not put in those words, that's what's implied). Then tragedy strikes at the very end of the series - or so it seems; I wonder what the next installment will reveal?
So, I read the reviews to this book before getting it.
I found that, contrary to a lot of reviewers, I enjoyed the whole series very much. It's a story of a hero passing on his prowess to the next generation after some dubious doings. Mean while the new hero to be is gradually growing to fill a role the reader/listener is made anxious to see define. Not bad at all for entertainment value. Not a waste of a credit, either.
So this series is quite entertaining - but, it left me vaguely unsatisfied.
This is another author that gave his main character phenomenal powers and then held him back. It just makes you go: "what a missed opportunity!"
In all though, it is enjoyable.
I thought that this series had a whole lot of steam at the beginning. It was very fun to listen to and the character was growing, learning etc.
She is still kind of doing that, but it just doesn't seem as interesting as it did at the start.
So, this book isn't a waste of a credit, but I cannot say it is as interesting as the first few books in the series.
I would say it is an example of a series that, though quite tenacious, hasn't kept it's steam - Please don't get me wrong - I love this author and his books; it is just my feeling about the series as it now is. I hope something will happen to make the books feel like they did at the start.
Of course find out what others think before you decide. The above is just my opinion.
So, after reading books 1 and 2 in the series, I almost did not read this third book in the series.
This was mostly due to the reviews of this book. It took me quite a while to decide to read it. But I'm not sorry that I did read it.
It is quite true that this book may not be for you due to the setting of the story. I, on the other hand, found the setting not too different from the setting of the other two books. In a lot of ways, I enjoyed this setting more than the other ones.
So, if some of the reviews have discouraged you, keep in mind that you may actually be delightfully surprised!
So this is another hit series in my opinion.
I loved the premise of the first book. I enjoyed this first book and was rather happy that Brandon Mall did not keep us waiting too long for the second book.
The series, so far, is very enjoyable and fun, even for adults.
I was very entertained by this series of books. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
I am very happy it will be available in about another week :-) I am counting the days!!
If you're looking for a good series, I suspect you might like this one. It was almost as enjoyable as Sorcerer Ascendant Sequence - Almost.
Find out what others say before you decide, though.
It was, in all, a good series of books to listen/read.
After listening to this book, I could not wait for the other books to be made audible. So, I went to amazon and got the printed versions - they were also very enjoyable.
My only biff with the author is that, although he gave the main character phenomenal powers, he then retarded those powers artificially to make the story more interesting. I though that was not necessary; my feeling is that the story would have been more enjoyable without artificially holding back the main character. Some authors feel they need to do that - it just ends up making the reader vaguely dissatisfied with the series, even if it is otherwise a great series.
Again, the above are simply my opinion. I would read / listen to the entire series when it is complete - it was fun to listen to/read.
Of course, I'd recommend you read other reviewers before you decide to commit to this series. After all, everything isn't for everyone.
If there's a book/series you enjoyed, please share it. Thanks.
Sometimes, I'm so busy enjoying a great listen I forget to tell others about it! That was the case with this sequence.
I finished listening to it, went and listened to 2 other books and read about 6 (Kindle versions from amazon) - but even through all those other stories, the enjoyment I got from this sequence kept calling me back - I had to come back and listen to it again - just for fun.
That doesn't mean that there weren't slow parts to the book - there were. Second time around, I just skipped those portions (lol).
What I really liked about this sequence of books was that the main character is allowed to grow, his development isn't held back by the writer simply to keep me listening as some writers do - he really grows, he learns, he uses what he learns to good effect, and all the while, I enjoy seeing it happen.
It was FUN! But of course, that's just what I think. I first entitled this review "Must Read!" Then I realized that everything, truly, isn't for everyone. So, at the very least, do yourself a favor and consider reading/listening to this series if you want something enjoyable to listen to. First though, see what others have to say before you decide.
If you have a book/series/sequence you've enjoyed, please share. Thanks.
BTW - if you're wondering what the series of books were that I read from Amazon (Kindle books above), it was the "eye of the moonrat" series and the series following that - it was entertaining, though I thought the main character's growth was artificially retarded by the writer - he didn't need that gambit to make it a good story.
