An incredible but true account of achieving one of the most awe-inspiring midlife physical transformations ever

In October 2006, the night before he was to turn forty, Rich experienced a chilling glimpse of his future. Nearly fifty pounds overweight and unable to climb the stairs without stopping, he saw where his sedentary lifestyle was taking him. Most of us look the other way when granted such a moment of clarity, but not Rich.

A very inspiring books initially and like many autobiographies a story of triumph over adversity. As the book progressed through to his veganism and his rational for choosing this lifestyle I thought I could see how this might work. The insights into his training were helpful and made sense. Then we come to the awful pseudoscience which was outrageously misinforming, followed by product placement of his and other products. This just destroyed any affinity I had for the guy. This book is a stage for the launch of Rich Rolls new career as the next smiley new celebrity diet fad guru. He may be a vegan but boy does he know how to promote cheese.

Bill Bryson and his family live in a Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as he found it in that comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his house from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”

    Tina says: "Another wonderful Bryson"
    "Bill is just great."

What did you love best about At Home?

It is full of snippits of history that lodge in your subconcious and then pop out in conversation which just make you sound clever.

What did you like best about this story?

It for the most part is just interesting all the way true.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is more of a book you would listen for an hour and then come back to a couple of hours later. It needs to be digested it is so information-laden.

    Any additional comments?

I didn't know he had an English accent! I thought he would sound like Richard Drayfuss.

There are two supreme predators on the planet with the most complex brains in nature: humans and orcas. In the 20th century alone, one of these animals killed 200 million members of its own species, the other killed none. Jeffrey Masson’s fascinating new book begins here: There is something different about us. In Beasts he demonstrates that the violence we perceive in the "wild" is mostly a matter of projection. We link the basest human behavior to animals, to "beasts" ("he behaved no better than a beast"), and claim the high ground for our species.

What would have made Beasts better?

The use of facts and science not anecdotes for a start. The whole underlying premise of the book is that he really wants his readers to quit eating meat. He has a rose-tinted view of the natural world, We are constantly reminded through-out how essentially despicable humans are. It is a joyless book and very bias.

Has Beasts turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but I will check the writers credentials in the future.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

I was well impressed as I listened to this book I thought the idea was very good and that it was entertaining, perhaps this would make a good movie and that I must send a copy to my friend who lives in the the U.S.
Then in the last quarter section the characters seemed to turn from amusing to annoying, whining like spoilt L.A high school kids. I don't want to ruin it for anyone but the ending is just sentimental and vomit inducing , only suitable for the most hardcore Oprah Winfrey fan.

Why are women more verbal than men? Why do women remember details of fights that men can't remember at all? Why do women tend to form deeper bonds with their female friends than men do with their male counterparts? These and other questions have stumped both sexes throughout the ages. Now, pioneering neuropsychiatrist Louann Brizendine, M.D., brings together the latest findings to show how the unique structure of the female brain determines how women think and what they value.

I have listened to this book and found it fascinating.I am a man living with two teenage daughters and partner, so life can be tough in this house of girls. If some one creates a hormonal control device that can balance the release of female hormones, they will not only win the Nobel Prize for Science but also the Nobel Peace Prize. They can have my house and i-pad too. Happy days!

Louann reads the book with a lovely warm voice full of sincerity.

I just bought her book on the male brain even though I already know it all!
