I was just looking for a place to use my book credits and I picked up this book and the follow-on book in this series. While the first book is good it really sets up the series and after listening to the second book I can more fully appreciate the first book and its key role in the series. If you are interested in great sweeping adventure and want to really enjoy the series start with this book. After book three I plan to go back an listen to book one again. It has hidden depths... Very well read and an exciting story.
This is an improbable story that somehow I just want to suspend my disbelief. There are some aspects to the situation that are so real (from my own personal military experience) to the storyline and yet there are aspects that require a lot of flexibility to accept. On the other hand it is exciting and moves the storyline along quite well. A worthy start to something that my be very interesting....
All series books have the advantage of being able to hold a long story arch... this is a worthy start. I think it has potential to be as good as any other series, as there is an almost wide open set of possibilities. But, it doesn't have the master craftsmanship of something like the "Foundation Trilogy." Still, this is only the first book and the potential is there for both more depth and complexity that would make this an excellent series.
Great job conveying the action and pace of the story.
Would you trust this man with the fate of the planet?
I actually really liked the "karma" of the hero in the sense that the Government was less than at it's best in dealing with him as an individual and even worse in dealing with the situation in the story. It enables a fairly harsh tension between the protagonist and the Government. Some of which is explained by corruption and some by stupidity... there story left me questioning which was more dangerous. So not just brainless action, but real questions about power and political correctness embedded for the reader to ponder.
I have listened to this book twice now. There are so many interesting ideas.
The moment when Harry falls into Butters and protects Butters from the hit man. Not sure who was more surprised, Harry, Butters, or me.
The ending was so unexpected.
Excellent series. I just wish Jim was as prolific as Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb.
In this book the character and history of Honor Harrington is further developed and a lot of background that is referred to in later books is laid down. The story flows well and the reading is excellent. I am not sure why or if there was some logic for the particular accents selected by the narrator, but it does serve well to help keep the characters organized. Highly recommended as a follow on to On Basilisk Station...
This is a well told story that has both an interesting story line and is well presented by the narrator. I found the series well into the later books, but it was a pleasure to go back an fill in the first part of the story because the development of the character of Honor Harrington is so well drawn. Allyson Johnson is amazing in the reading. Her voice is there carrying the story along and yet transparent at the same time. She is among the best I have heard in any of the dozens audiobooks I have listened to in the last three years.
This story is fast paced and great fun to listen too. Like te first book it tells several parallel stories that get woven into a tight fabric. Well read and just an excellent story. I just picked up the third book... I can hardly wait for the download to complete.
Overall, one of the better audio books. I have enjoyed listening to it. Very well read and a great story with plenty to think about in the human condition, as the best science fiction often provides. There are a few well written but explicit sex scenes, but they are an important part of the story, too? if you are easily offended by such graphic descriptions you might want to be forewarned. But, by understanding how they fit in, you should be able to enjoy the richness of the characters and the story that Morgan has created.
