Its pretty high up there so far. Maybe my #5.
Book 1 of the series because it's a Dexter book.
Jeff Lindsay narrating his own books has really been the biggest weakness of listening to these books. His Dexter is ok, but doesnt have a lot of consistancy to it. Some times Dexter sounds like a girl. To be honest none of the voices have much consistancy to them. Deb and the kid voices are by far the worst.
Do me and about 90% of the other audiobook listeners a favor and pleas, please, PLEASE let someone else with more charisma and emotion (like an actual voice actor) read these book! Im sure you guys could easily start a "kick starter" to get the money to have Michael C Hall or someone close to read atleast the Dexter parts. I would gladly donate!
I would love to say yes to both of those, but honestly the dullness of Lindsays narration made it very difficult to get too sucked into the story.
Bad narration aside, this is a very good listen for Dexter fans. And if you are a fan of Season 2 of the show then you will like the diffrences.
I would totally recomend this book to a friend. I would maybe recommend reading it instead of listening to it. Or at least warn them of Jeff Lindsays horrible narration.
Just about any other Dexter book before it....well not book 3. Skip book 3.
Wow, I'll give anyone a shot and it would probably improve. The dream team narration would be to have the core cast of the show read the lines when that character speaks, as in some books that I've heard. Michael C Hall would be perfect of course and maybe just get a random actor and actress to narrate the other supporting characters.
But more realistically, Nick Landrum was VERY good! Can we please get him back and maybe re-record the previous books?
Um.....It is already a tv show.....
All in all this book was very good. Very graphic and funny at times. It could have eased up on the discription of every little thing that Dexter sees, touches, or experiances. Though Jeff Lindsays narration is still bad and inconsistant when voicing different chraracters, it was a slight improvement from his previous narrations.
Much better narrator!!!
The story did keep me on egde on multiple occations. There were some slow parts and parts that i was bored by. And the use of some characters and how Dexter intracts with them is getting a little repedative, but all in all it was much better.
His voice was a lot more charismatic. He put alot more effort into giving each character thier own voice, and kept them consistant for the most part. And did a lot better job with the women and children voices!! Let him do them from now on!!!!
At times it was kinda hard for me to stop listening to it.
This book was all around a big improvment from the last book. The story was much better and Nick Landrum was soooo much more of an improvement compared to Jeff Linday as the narrator. I noticed that the next 2 books aer going to be back to Lindsay narrating (Which makes me not as excited for the next book as I should be) but hopfully Audible or the powers that be will read all of these reviews and realize that people want Landrum for futur Dexter books. PLEASE AUDIBLE! Dont make me look elsewhere!
Um, im not really sure. The killings are really good and gory.
Yes, The first 2 books were eally good. I like them and want to finish the series.
His voices were distracting and at times "nails on a chalk board" annoying. They also dont have a very good consistancy to them. Deb's voice will change constantly through out the book which at times makes it hard to figure out who is talking. Not to mention that Debs voice is the most annoying of all. If you arent going to keep them consistant then dont do them at all.
Plus Dexters voice is either very dull sounding or he sounds like he is trying to do a womaans voice for him. Either way please get another narrator. i know Michael C Hall is probably not going to happen but can we atleast try someone close and at least with more charisma?
It depends, If you are on a long car, train, or plane ride then sure.
Before I listened to this I read a lot of reviews and they were all very much negative and with the same complaints. Regaurdless I decided to give it a listen because I am a completest so I wanted to listen to them all. Unfortunatly I was very disapointed with it. The Story was not great, although not as bad as people have said, but it was very boring at a lot of parts. Honestly the dullness might not have been as bad if the narrator were not so dull and bad with voices.
I was not a big fan of "The Watcher" in the story and his narration at the end of chapters did tend to take me out of the story and didnt really seem nessecary for the story. But i understand that it was the author trying something new and it just didnt work. It happens. My only other complaint about the story is**SPOILERS** that it seems like Dexter does nothing but complain about his missing dark passenger. Doing it here and there would be fine, but he whines about it in every chapter.
All in all it was an okay listen. The story wasnt as engaging or suspensful, and with Lindsay's narration, alot of the characters are really annoying. But if you like the previous 2 Dexter books and you are a completist then give it a listen. Otherwise you could probably read a detailed synopsis about it and move on to the next one. From what I understand it has a diffrent reader and is better.
