A very interesting way to tell a story, and the narrator does a fantastic job. This is a very disturbing tale about a family gone terribly wrong. All told from the mother's perspective in the form of letters to the father, it gets more and more addictive the further it gets along. Part cautionary tale and part mystery, the story of Kevin is heartbreaking and chilling. I couldn't get my mind off this book days after I finished listening! I watched the movie a couple of days after and I believe they did a very good job at telling the story; like another reviewer, I would recommend reading/listening first and then watching the film.
This collection starts out very strong. The first few stories are great, particularly a vampire tale read in a very convincing british accent. However, at a certain point I found the quality very uneven. I am not a prude when it comes to reading dark fiction - I actually enjoy blood and guts and I have a very strong stomach, but some of the tales lapse into grossness for the sake of grossness. Dare I say "potty humor"? Close to it. I actually had to turn one of them off.
I would recommend this overall for any fans of horror with a dark comedy edge. There were times I laughed out loud. But just know that, like most anthologies, not every story is up to snuff. So even if you skip a couple here and there, you will still end up entertained in the end because there are plenty of stories here and you get your credit's worth of listening. Don't skip the vampire story - I believe it is the 2nd or 3rd one.
This is a great preamble for those who have not watched The Thing or The Thing From Another World. Or those who have to give you greater insight. It's amazing how this story is so ahead of its time and how it still holds one enthralled. A great, tight little SF thriller that will hold your interest until the end. Highly recommended!
