  • Intercept: A Novel of Suspense

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Patrick Robinson
    • Narrated By Charles Leggett
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A left-leaning judge liberates four of the most dangerous al-Qaeda terrorists from Guantanamo Bay and the CIA field officers track them back to Pakistan's northwest frontier mountain range. But the men vanish and rejoin the dark and mysterious forces trained by Osama bin Laden high in the Hindu Kush. These are men with hatred for the United States and Great Britain, and they are sworn to hit back at the USA, which imprisoned so many of their high command.

Mark Laskow says: "Bottom Decile Writing"
    "Reliably diverting and engrossing"

As with any Patrick Robinson books I've listened to, this was full of military themes and personnel, and a dastardly plot by evil doers to commit mischief on the US of A. Not being a right wing conservative who thinks Dick Cheney walks on water, the far right political bent can be a little tedious. But the story telling is terrific, and his characters, while rather one-sided, always leave you rooting for the good guys. One my favorite lines from his books is the Navy Seals philosophy that there are few problems in the world that cannot be solved with enough high explosive. If you like action and military themes, you'll enjoy this (or any other) Patrick Robinson book.

  • A Kingdom Besieged: Book One of the Chaoswar Saga

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 4 mins)
    • By Raymond E. Feist
    • Narrated By John Meagher
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

After nearly 30 years and more than two dozen novels, Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar Cycle has become one of the most iconic, beloved, and enduring sagas in modern fantasy. The Riftwars were epic battles between Good and Evil whose ramifications have echoed through generations. The latest entry in the epic, A Kingdom Besieged, ushers in the most fearsome threat the Kingdom has yet faced - the Chaoswar - a magic apocalypse with cataclysmic results.

Rob says: "Job Opening: New Narrator Needed"
"Terrible narrator. Couldn't finish the story."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I love Raymond Feist's books and was really looking forward to hearing this recorded version. Unfortunately, the narrator spoiled the story. Other reviewers have accurately detailed the narrators shortfalls. Suffice to say this is a recorded version to skip.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator spoke to quickly. There was minimal difference in his voice between characters male or female, and as another reviewer commented, when there was a difference it was forced making it even worse. I have nothing positive to say about this narrator's performance. It ruined the story for me and for a number of other reviewers. A casting director somewhere made a terrible choice.

  • God Is Disappointed in You

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Mark Russell, Shannon Wheeler
    • Narrated By James Urbaniak
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

God Is Disappointed in You is for people who would like to read the Bible...if it would just cut to the chase. Stripped of its arcane language and interminable passages, every book of the Bible is condensed down to its core message, in no more than a few pages each. Written by Mark Russell with cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler, God Is Disappointed in You is a frequently hilarious, often shocking, but always accurate retelling of the Bible, including the parts selectively left out by Sunday School teachers.

arthur m ball says: "The Bible without all the fluff."
What did you love best about God Is Disappointed in You?

A hilarious retelling of the bible, updated for the 21rst century.

What did you like best about this story?

Perfect for those of us who have never read the bible, nor had any inclination to.

  • Big Trouble

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 12 mins)
    • By Dave Barry
    • Narrated By Dick Hill

A chain of events that will change the lives of each and every character will leave some of them wiser, some of them deader, and some of them definitely looking for a new line of work. With a wicked wit, razor-sharp observations, rich characters, and a plot with more twists than the Inland Waterway, Dave Barry makes his debut a complete and utter triumph.

Scott says: "Classic Barry at his Best"
    "A disappointment"

I usually find Dave Berry's articles and short blurbs amusing, only occassionally reading it and not laughing. After half an hour of listening to this and not laughing once, I gave it up. Perhaps it's just not my sense of humor, but it was a disappointment.
