Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

This is one incidence where I think the audio book is probably better than the written one. The performances were better than anything I'd ever listened to. They really seemed to captured the flavor of the south. Once I found myself wondering what a mint julep tastes like, many times I tried hard NOT to wonder what that chocolate pie tasted like, (shiver) and I often imagined myself sitting in a rocking chair on a front porch, overlooking a large lawn and giant shade tree, while drinking a sweaty glass of Ice cold sweet tea and listening to a couple of southern women talk about their day, on a hot Mississippi afternoon. I've listened to a few really good audio books and this is one of the best, if not the best, I've ever experienced.

I really enjoyed the first two books and thought I'd do things differently for the third book and listen to it in audio format. Jogging with headphones and listening to this is tolerable enough, but when listening in the car during my commute, there were certain times when stopping at a traffic light I couldn't hit the mute button fast enough. Embarrassing and funny at the same time. I'm sure my face was red on many occasions even as I pretended to act nonchalant.
I'm also pretty sure that reading the book would have been more enjoyable than listening to it. After listening to The Help, I couldn't help feeling the narrater could have transformed herself into the character better. I was also put off by the constant "Oh my!" and "inner goddess" phrases in audio format. While I read the first two books, I'm sure those phrases were repeated as much, it just seemed annoying when listening to it. I also kept waiting for the kinky stuff to happen. Isn't that what this series was built around? Did I mention the embarrassment of listening to the love scenes with the top down? (I know I did, but it's worth mentioning twice : )

In Conclusion: If you're a guy, read this book and listen to "The Help" instead.

In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, set in 12th-century England. Readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End also takes place in Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge.

If you've read Pillars of the Earth, then you know to expect great things from this book. I read Pillars of the Earth before joining Audible, and if you haven't read "Pillars" then stop right now and do so. It would be a shame to miss such a powerfully written book. Wanting to read the sequel, I purchased World Without End from Audible and gave it a listen. I was hooked from the first chapter. The reader has a wonderful british accent which helps transport you to the thirteenth century England, where you will live for quite a while. The characters and the story help you understand how this primitive society functions, revealing a tremendous amount of research. This is a long book, so you definitely get your money's worth. I thought I heard the ending a couple of times, but the story kept on going. I wondered why Ken Follett would go on with the book when there were perfectly good endings earlier, and it seemed like he was jumping through the years from ending to ending until the story finally ended. I'm glad he did keep going. The final ending was much better than the "earlier" ones I thought closed the story nicely. Perhaps he did end the book earlier, but kept getting better ideas and added them on until the last one. (Perhaps it was just my current mental exhaustion of finishing my own novel.) Anyway, this book was definitely one of the best I have listened to on Audible. The ending is superb.

Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point: really hard, and not much fun at all. And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you're in a Dip: a temporary setback that you will overcome if you keep pushing. But maybe it's really a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.

If you are a writer, you know the dip. It often comes after your first few weeks of writing a new book, after the subject is no longer fresh, the story is pretty much fleshed out, or your outline is fairly complete. . . then boredom sets in. The new challenges that stimulated you into all that hard work earlier, are no longer interesting. Now the hard, boring, day to day work comes in. The poring over your every word, comma and plot point--many times over. You are in the dip. The thing that separates the pros from the wanna-bees. This audio makes this concept very real, which also makes it very possible to overcome. It also may help you with finding out just how vested you are in a story or book, and if you should quit or persevere. This book is definitely worth a listen.

Turning 27 may be terrifying for some, but for Alex, a struggling artist living in the midwestern United States, it is cataclysmic. Inheriting a huge expanse of land should have made him a rich and happy man; but something about this birthday, his name, and the beautiful woman whose life he just saved, has suddenly made him - and everyone he loves - into a target.

I heard this book on the radio, and got hooked. I joined Audible just to finish the story. The reader is GREAT for this book. He makes it easy to get lost in the story. I can't imagine anyone else reading it really.
