Glad I took a chance on this book. I kept seeing this book listed but it never showed any reviews. Since I love reading about other cultures I decided to take a chance and it really was quite decent. Although it is a collection of stories all with a common theme each story is different and explores the subject...arranged marriage, in different ways...they are not predictable. The rich character development, the descriptive details and the perfect narrator made this book enjoyable,

Warning: You may have a huge, invisible spider living in your skull. This is not a metaphor. You will dismiss this as ridiculous fearmongering. Dismissing things as ridiculous fearmongering is, in fact, the first symptom of parasitic spider infection - the creature secretes a chemical into the brain to stimulate skepticism, in order to prevent you from seeking a cure. That’s just as well, since the “cure” involves learning what a chain saw tastes like. You can’t feel the spider, because it controls your nerve endings.

I really enjoyed this book, however, the ending was kind of a little pulled out of thin air. Reminded me of some of the Stephen King books where he kind of got himself backed into a corner and had a hard time ending the book. This is not to say that this book was not enjoyable, it was, however I just wanted to add that about the ending. This book follows the adventures of David Wong and his best buddy Jack who are quite used to run-ins with the weird and un-worldly. It's just as good as their previous book, and had the right amount of humor along with the suspense. The story opens up when David is bitten by a horrible creature hidden beneath his sheets and continues very fast paced as the infestation of these horrible creatures multiplies. The whole town gets involved...I'd tell you the name of the town, but, as the book goes...they don't want to let that info out to harm the town, so, they refer to it as "unknown" every time the name of the town should pop up. Good book, fast paced until the last 1/3d where it's still fast paced but starts to get a little crazy even for a horror/fiction novel.
    Well worth the credit.

More than 40 years ago, Mario Puzo wrote his iconic portrait of the Mafia underworld as told through the fictional first family of American crime, the Corleones. The leader, Vito Corleone, is the Godfather. He is a benevolent despot who stops at nothing to gain and hold power. His command post is a fortress on Long Island from which he presides over a vast underground empire that includes the rackets, gambling, bookmaking, and unions. His influence runs through all levels of American society, from the cop on the beat to the nation's mighty.

Read the novel, saw the movie both years ago, enjoyed listening to the audio version. Fast moving story detailing life as a mobster with a surprise ending. I enjoyed the characters and how each of them had their own story, how it unfolded and intertwined. Great attention to detail and the time span of the story was nice. Very enjoyable.

Amanda Lindhout reads her spectacularly dramatic memoir of a woman whose curiosity about the world led her from rural Canada to imperiled and dangerous countries on every continent, and then into 15 months of harrowing captivity in Somalia - a story of courage, resilience, and extraordinary grace. In August 2008, she traveled to Mogadishu, Somalia - "the most dangerous place on Earth." On her fourth day in the country, she and her photojournalist companion were abducted.

This novel follows the life of a self-made journalist as she lives to earn money to travel, write and take photos. When she gets caught up in terrorism and is kidnapped in Somalia she details the almost day by day life in captivity. This was at times hard to listen to as the kidnappers were so brutal, but, reading the triumph of spirit makes for a rewarding read.

This book had a combination of things that really made it impossible to finish...things like the little details that ran over and over and reading like this ....(gwen to another) ..."time to find another tennis partner" BIG PAUSE, wait for it, wait for it...."said Gwen". I found this book extremely irritating for some reason and although I have listened and listened to the same parts over and over I still don't get it.

I purchased this book solely on the five star ratings...what a mistake. This book was shear torture to listen to. I even skipped a few chapters hoping it would pick up; nope, never did. The book just ran so slow and the plot seemed to get lost in all the detailed descriptions of the many characters and their day to day lives. Snore. I honestly do NOT understand how so many people could have rated this book so high. I really, honestly don't. I even went back and read all the reviews in hopes that I missed something, or, maybe I had not hit the "good part" of the book, but, after listening to (and re-listening and re-listening) I just can't take it any more. I'm returning the book. I guess you can't really go on what other folks like, but, there were so many of them that simply raved about this book, I don't understand it. I thought the narrator was ok, but, maybe subconsciencely her voice was what was boring me to tears. I really can't honestly say, but, to each his own. I'm really sorry to have to rate it so low, in fact, I rarely do ratings since people have different tastes, but, I could not let this one slip by.

Would you consider the audio edition of Mr. Mercedes to be better than the print version?

I DID consider the audio version which is what I purchased.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot was not predictive, the characters were well developed and interesting. This is a great mystery story with lots of twists and turns and imagination. Hodges, the retired detective being pulled back in to action to hunt the demented killer and all those who made up the story made for a great listen. Will Patterson was an awesome narrator.

Which character – as performed by Will Patton – was your favorite?

    Hodges

If you could take any character from Mr. Mercedes out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Holly, because she could use a few more friends to show her how awesome she is.

    Any additional comments?

I resisted buying this book for a while afraid maybe some of the reviews were over-rated. I was glad I purchased it. This book was full of twists and turns and not predictable at all, and, the end was complete without throwing in extra plots just to tie up loose ends. The characters and plot were well developed and it kept me on the edge of my chair. I almost, but not quite, finished this in one sitting. It was really that good. This was a good old mystery and although full of details not to the point of becoming boring. Hodges as a "ret. det" was a truly believable character. Not all monsters are other worldly; they live among us. Will Patterson is one of my favorite narrators and he did a fantastic job as always. Glad I took the chance!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I feel this book was totally slow...hard to get in to and after only 45 mins. I'm returning it.In my opinion it's not worth a credit. I admit I purchased it solely on the reviews, but, as much as I wanted to like it and as much as I like the narrator, I just couldn't get in to it. It was just fluffy and lacking (in my opinion) anything that really grabbed me enough to want to even finish. Maybe it got better but I have to be honest, I just couldn't listen any more.

An ordinary parking lot in southern California. Christine Scavello and her six-year-old son are accosted by a strange old woman. "I know who you are," the woman snaps at the boy. "I know what you are." A scream, a threat - and then a grotesque act of violence. Suddenly Christine's pride and joy, her only son, is targeted by a group of religious fanatics. They've branded him the Antichrist. They want to kill him. And they are everywhere.

Would you listen to The Servants of Twilight again? Why?

I love Dean Koontz and will probably always give his books a chance but this one was a bit slow in some spots. I would not listen to this book (or read) it again. At times it just seemed to drag on and on...the endless descriptions of every little detail just sort of turned in to bla...bla...bla after a while. The narrator was a bit grating at first, then, kind of fell in to the flow of things in the second part. Don't think I could listen to this again but it was enjoyable enough for a one time listen.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters were diverse and for the most part unpredictable which I think added to the appeal of the story. Things picked up in the second half and made the book a worthwhile listen.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrator was not exactly bad, but, at first, she just didn't seem to be a good fit for this novel. Towards the second part of the book, her performance either got better or I got used to her style.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, not one way or the other but the overall story was pretty interesting.

    Any additional comments?

A young mother and son are threatened by a cult convinced that the son is the anti-christ...they are joined by a private eye and are on the run. It was handy for them that money was not an issue, when they needed cars, guns, hideouts...they all fell in to place. One of the sad parts for me was the pain the child had to end. The story and narrator both picked up towards the end of the book. Of course, there is the ending...

I find long and drawn out reviews tiring and for the most part very unhelpful so I try to keep my reviews short and if I've left out some information that some might find helpful in deciding whether or not to purchase this book please forgive me. In the end we all have to make our own decisions and as I've discovered in the past you can't always depend on just a few reviews. Some of the shortest reviews have been most helpful to me and some, no matter how long or rambling or descriptive have not been.

What did you like best about Red Sparrow? What did you like least?

I guess what I liked best was the overall story...the spy versus spy but I had to go back and listen to parts of it over and over because there was too much jumping around. The overall story has great potential but perhaps for me this would have been better read than listened. I wanted to like Nate and Dominika but for me the story seemed to run together too much and while most of the characters and scenes were poorly developed there were some scenes that stood out...but too few to give this more than a mediocre rating.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The attemp to make this a suspense filled spy novel with strong romance overtones just didn't work for me. I would have developed some of the characters and scenes more fully...left off some of the references that made no sense (...brick lined Richmond...silk road peddler etc. Etc.) And focused more on telling the story rather making it sound more like a laundry list like he did this...she did that then breaking into dialog then using a accented voice for a particular character and next time not.,.. all the jumping around which worked sometimes but far too often did not.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Jeremy Bobb?

MAYBE...but as for this book I feel he was not consistant in his narration ...at times he droned on and on and at other times he tried to animate what a character was saying but then in mid"conversation he would go back to reading in a monotone voice. For the most part his narration was halted and inconsistant.

Did Red Sparrow inspire you to do anything?

Yes...return the book. I admit I purchased this based on the previous reviews and in the future I'll not rely on what others have to say so much. I would not have even given this book a three star rating except for the fact that it was probably better read...it did have a few decent moments and I really wanted the story and chacters to work but everything seemed to not fall in to place. The whole spy story thing...the love story...the murder mystery...good and bad characters...it just didn't fall in to place for me. Also...the narration...in my opinion was not too good. I found myself wondering why the previous reviewers found this such a good book. The inner workings of all the different intelligence communities should have added spice to the book rather than sound like a laundry list of you do this they do that and on and on. One positive note is that I did like the recipes...a nice touch.

    Any additional comments?

In the future I'll cbeck out what reviewers outside the Audible community have to say about a title together with what the Audible reviewers write and then make my decision whether or not to purchase a title. I guess I'm just very surprized how different my opinion of this book was from the other Audible reviewers and I guess that's why I wanted to add this review...so perspective listeners can see the varied reviews and judge for themselves.
