Among Schoolchildren illuminates a year in the life of a fifth-grade teacher struggling to make a positive difference in the lives of her students. In Holyoke, Massachuetts, Christine Zajac toils far from the limelight. Her story, and that of her students is heart-warming and inspiring as she helps them to become full-scale human beings. We find that some are brilliant, that others are troubled, and that Ms. Zajac never gives up.

I enjoyed the story even though it moves fairly slowly. I liked the characters. Found the narrator irritating. Listen to a sample before you buy.

Karl Petrofsky has spent his years in school trying to hide the A's on his papers. He sees himself more as a shy maverick than a geek.

When the smoothest guy in high school asks him to aid and abet a ring of high-tech cheaters, Karl flatly refuses. But then the tyrannical assistant principal makes an example of a hapless student - and threatens anyone caught cheating with expulsion and an indelible stain on their permanent record. This means war!

Good story, though I think I would have liked it better as a paperback. I think the 11-16 yr olds will enjoy it.

Fire Lover is the incredible true story of John Orr. As a young boy growing up in Los Angeles, Orr watched with awe as firefighters put out blazes with a seeming disregard for their own lives. Wanting to emulate his heroes, he later became a fireman, a fire captain, and one of Southern California's most renowned serial arson investigators.

    "Long and tedious"
    Overall

This book comes in two sections because it is so long. Unfortunately it is also tedious with details. The title sounds exciting, but it's not! The second half is worse, and I fast-forwarded through most of it. There is a strong connection between the fires and sex. I never knew there were so many ways to describe a man getting off. Don't bother with this one unless you like court transcripts!
