  • Edge of Eternity: The Century Trilogy, Book 3

    • UNABRIDGED (36 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Ken Follett
    • Narrated By John Lee
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

Elisa says: "Some good, some bad"
"Huge let down from first 2 books"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Needed a credible story to engage me, felt like he just jammed his characters into events and then retold history with a degree of bias. By the end I was tired of the story and the characters.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Enjoyed the Berlin Wall coming down and the build up around that - felt engaging

    Any additional comments?

In all the trilogy is a good long listen that starts great and ends poorly. Some of this may be my lack of intimate knowledge in regards to the early content vs the story in the third book that I lived through and in many places his version seemed very different than my understanding. The problem this created is , that I now view the early content as distorted and biased as well and that in the end ruined this series for me. Unlike Pillars that I can listen to again and enjoy, I doubt I will ever come back to this series. It was a like a long visit from relatives, started good and enjoyed the time then by the end glad its over.

  • Black Cross

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs and 14 mins)
    • By Greg Iles
    • Narrated By Dick Hill
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

It is January 1944 - and as Allied troops prepare for D day, Nazi scientists develop a toxic nerve gas that will repel and wipe out any invasion force. To salvage the planned assault, two vastly different but equally determined men are sent to infiltrate the secret concentration camp where the poison gas is being perfected on human subjects. Their only objective: destroy all traces of the gas and the men who created it - no matter how many lives may be lost...including their own.

Jim "The Impatient" says: "They Might Be Scum, But they were German Scum"
    "Ok WWII thriller"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I struggled with this book, as I really wanted to like it but parts just seemed to drag. Actually had to fast forward through a few chapters just to keep it moving.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Actually took forever to get to the action. the parts of life in the camp did not add anything to this story for me.

Would you be willing to try another one of Dick Hill’s performances?

I may be in the minority here but I do not enjoy a Dick Hill book anymore. His constantly whiny female voices are killing me. Add that to his uneven tones and volumes I really will avoid his work for awhile

Was Black Cross worth the listening time?

50/50 here. Good premise but dragged a lot and seemed like more more work than fun in the end.

  • Moonlight Mile

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Dennis Lehane
    • Narrated By Jonathan Davis
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Amanda McCready was four years old when she vanished from a Boston neighborhood 12 years ago. Kenzie and Gennaro risked everything to find the young girl - only to orchestrate her return to a neglectful mother and a broken home. Now Amanda is sixteen - and gone again. Haunted by their consciences, Kenzie and Gennaro revisit the case that troubled them the most. Their search leads them into a world of identity thieves, methamphetamine dealers, and more....

Ian says: "Smart, asks and answers some tough questions."
"Continues Lehane's storyline but a weaker attempt"
If you???ve listened to books by Dennis Lehane before, how does this one compare?

This is my least favorite Lehane so far, Still a decent listen but seemed to lack the suspense and depth of the others. Without providing a spoiler it was a weaker ending then I have grown to expect from Lehane.

  • Deception Point: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Dan Brown
    • Narrated By Richard Poe
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When a NASA satellite discovers an astonishingly rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice, the floundering space agency proclaims a much-needed victory, a victory with profound implications for NASA policy and the impending presidential election. To verify the authenticity of the find, the White House calls upon the skills of intelligence analyst Rachel Sexton. Accompanied by a team of experts, including the charismatic scholar Michael Tolland, Rachel travels to the Arctic and uncovers the unthinkable.

Mark says: "Some people are too picky -- This is a must"
"Very good book - horrible narrator"

Nice suspense story, well written and enjoyable to follow.

However this may be the worst narrator ever for an audible book, he makes all kinds of noices between sentences that become very annoying. Key was enough volume to hear the story but low enough to minimize his noices.

  • Magic Lands: Journey Beyond the Beyond

    • UNABRIDGED (2 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Robert Stanek

Magic Lands: Journey Beyond the Beyond is a refreshingly unique fantastic adventure that is suitable for readers of all ages while containing all the icky-gooey-creepy details that are sure to delight! Following the village elder's advice, Ray leaves his home village, setting out for the place lost and deep where he will find a companion for his journey to the stone land and where he will discover that there is no easy path from childhood to manhood.

Arnold says: "Wild About Magic Lands"
    "Very tough to finish"

Not at all what I expected. Instead of a magic fantasy with wizards it was a coming to age story in a different world setting that bored my 12yr old to death. The authors attempt at creating a different world with different words just became frustrating to listen to.

  • The Quiller Memorandum

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Adam Hall
    • Narrated By Simon Prebble
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

You are a secret agent working for the British in Berlin. You are due to go home on leave, but you are being followed by the enemy - or your own people. A man meets you in the theater and briefs you on a plot to revive the power of Nazi Germany. You do not believe him, but you remember that one of the suspects mentioned was a senior SS officer you met while you were working as a spy in Nazi Germany. Next, you make contact with a beautiful girl who may know something. Someone tries to kill both of you.

Joe Pawlowski says: "An entertaining thriller"
"Story stops with an interesting premise"

The idea of a post WWII Germany and hunting for evil Nazi's had potential. The book however realized none of it as it rambles through a self reflective narrative that neither tells a story nor develops any characters.

90% of the time the story deals with what the main character is thinking. It never seems to develop into a plot to follow nor enjoy.

This easily is my least favorite Audible download in 3 years. Maybe if you have enjoyed other of this authors books you may enjoy it, but I found it uncompelling and tedious.
