  • Soulless: An Alexia Tarabotti Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By Gail Carriger
    • Narrated By Emily Gray
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Victorian romance mixes seamlessly with elegant prose and biting wit—and werewolves—in Gail Carriger’s delightful debut novel. Soulless introduces Alexia Tarabotti, a parasol-wielding Londoner getting dangerously close to spinster status. But there are more important things than finding a husband. For Alexia was born without a soul, giving her the ability to render any vampire or werewolf completely powerless.

What did you love best about Soulless?

If Jane Austen and Dr. Seuss had a love child it would be Gail Carriger. I am so jealous of her command of the language and her bizarre imagination. She combines the Victorian English of Austen with the vivid imagery of Seuss to write some of the funniest prose I have ever heard. I generally hate sex scenes in books, they are typically so overwrought, but these are the best sex scenes ever!! Hilarious. I have purchased well over 1000, yes I said 1000 books, from Audible and I have never bothered to write a review before but I enjoyed these books so much I had to take moment to sing their praises. I raced through all five books. I also hooked a friend on them who also raced through all five books. We both have Ph.Ds by the way, so not just for the young adult. Please Ms. Carriger...write quickly!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Soulless?

No spoilers from me. Just don't listen to it in places where you would be embarassed to laugh out loud to yourself.

Have you listened to any of Emily Gray’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Emily Gray is my new favorite narrator. I would like her to start freelancing with other companies and spend all of her time reading as many books as possible. Her ability to find the perfect voice for each character and the perfect inflection for each phrase is unsurpassed by any other narrator I have ever listened to. These books would not have been nearly as funny without her as the reader. I am in awe of her ability to create so many separate characters each with such distinct personalities.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Hilarious is my first response. You become very attached to the characters and the villians are villians you will love to hate. Great fun....I would not steer you wrong my darling blue bells!

  • In Search of the Rose Notes

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 49 mins)
    • By Emily Arsenault
    • Narrated By Khristine Hvam
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Eleven-year-olds Nora and Charlotte were best friends. When their teenage babysitter, Rose, disappeared under mysterious circumstances, the girls decided to investigate. But their search - aided by paranormal theories and techniques gleaned from old Time-Life books - went nowhere. Years later, Nora, now in her late 20s, is drawn back to her old neighborhood - and to her estranged friend - when Rose's remains are finally discovered.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the read, it held my interest throughout. It combines explores highschool anxst and an interesting murder mystery.

Would you be willing to try another book from Emily Arsenault? Why or why not?

I would, but I'm not not knocking down the door for them either.

Did Khristine Hvam do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Had no problem differentiating characters but not the best narrator I've heard.

Was In Search of the Rose Notes worth the listening time?

If I don't enjoy a book, I don't finish it. Life is too short, so I did enjoy it.

  • Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Now with Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem!

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By Seth Grahame-Smith, Jane Austen
    • Narrated By Katherine Kellgren

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains." So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem.

Katelyn says: "One word - Awesome!"

The author may have given Jane Austen author billing, but if one of my students turned this in, I'd give them an F for plagiarism. It's 90% Jane Austen with a little martial arts and zombies thrown in. I really enjoy it when authors take old classics and create something entirely new with it, like Rebecca's Tale, or Wicked, or Wide Sargasso Sea, but this is just theft! I'm really surprised they published this. I would hate to see a trend toward people taking material that's no longer protected by copyright laws, changing it a little and making a profit off of someone else's creativity.
