Andrew Yancy - late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office - has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing). But first - this being Hiaasen country - Yancy must negotiate an obstacle course of wildly unpredictable events with a crew of even more wildly unpredictable characters.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I really enjoyed listening to this book. The characters are well crafted and complex, the situations absurd, the pace rapid and compelling. And the performance by Arte Johnson -- let's just say I went on a search for more books he'd narrated and was disappointed to find that Carl Hiaasen's other novels are not among them.

What did you like best about this story?

Crazy but likeable characters, funny situations.

Have you listened to any of Arte Johnson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No, haven't but will be!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to, but couldn't. Perfect for car travel listening.

    Any additional comments?

    Summer reading at its best.

The authority of the Syndicate Worlds’ government is crumbling. Civil war and rebellion are breaking out in many star systems, despite the Syndic government’s brutal attempts to suppress disorder. Midway is one of those star systems, and leaders there must decide whether to remain loyal to the old order or fight for something new.

What disappointed you about The Lost Stars: Tarnished Knight?

I think it tried for "epic" but only achieved "yawn". The characters were not likeable, poorly developed and one dimensional. The world described is one where paranoia and suspicion of another's motives reign supreme. Over the course of the book, it just made everyone in it repellent. I fell asleep listening to this over and over.

What was most disappointing about Jack Campbell’s story?

It was like a dry play by play of an interactive sci-fi battle game.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Marc Vietor?

I don't know. Marc tried but the words just ran into each other, without variation, ad nauseam.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Dislike. I didn't enjoy my time in this world.

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to deliver an evening lecture in the U.S. Capitol. Within minutes of his arrival, the night takes a bizarre turn. A disturbing object is discovered in the Capitol Building. The object is an ancient invitation, meant to usher its recipient into a long-lost world of hidden esoteric wisdom. And when Langdon's mentor is kidnapped, Langdon's only hope of saving him is to accept this invitation and follow wherever it leads him.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I usually enjoy Dan Brown's writing. I listened to his first 3 books and really liked them. This one, however, was not as engaging. I thought it just got bogged down in the symbology, and I wouldn't call the characters really well fleshed out - the bad guy was a comic book villain, and his motivations for doing what he did were bizarre, a bit of a stretch.

    So, I'd call this book a "ho-hum".

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I probably should have listened to the abridged version.

Which character – as performed by Paul Michael – was your favorite?

    The gravel-voiced CIA director.

Could you see The Lost Symbol being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    No
