I wanted to listen to this book because one of my most favorite author's-Barbara Delinsky had written "Looking for Peyton Place" in 2005 and I wanted to know and learn about the book it was based on.
The original Peyton Place was a good book and kind of slowed down in some parts and in other parts kept me hooked. I didn't hurry to finish this one like I have some others because I have been so engrossed with them, but it wasn't a bad book necessarily.
An unexpected bonus after the book was completed is the 60 minute or so review by the narrator discussing the controversy surrounding the release of Peyton Place nearly 60 years ago. This was very interesting to listen too because I honestly didn't know that Grace Metalious was one of the first and few to blow the lid off such subjects as child abuse and whatnot and was such a controversial figure in her time.
The narrator does a fantastic job and was very enjoyable to listen too. I wasn't sure how a man could portray all of these womens voices, but I thought he did a great job!
I did like this book and I actually took up knitting after listening to this book! It is a very engaging story and I found myself looking forward to the drive to be able to listen to it. But the ending seemed to almost come out of nowhere and I was not pleased with that aspect of it. Obviously I don't want to ruin the ending for any potential listener, but I was very disappointed with how the characters lives ended up and that almost ruined the whole book for me! But other than that, it was a good book. For those who weren't aware, Julia Roberts is actually starring in and producing this movie in 2008 so that should be fun to see! As far as what other people are saying about the narrator and so on, I actually chose this book based on the narrator because I find her voice very engaging and I was not let down in this book at all either!
This was a fantastic book to listen too! The narrators voice was so pleasant and the plot was fantastic as usual(much like all of Fannie Flagg's books). The reader may feel more "in the loop" if they are able to read the book that precedes this one (Standing in the Rainbow) but is not necessary to enjoy this delightful book.
You will not be disappointed if you choose to purchase this audiobook. This was one of those books that I did not want to end and I wanted to keep going about the characters lives! I would definitely recommend this title for a moving and yet lighthearted book! Just fantastic!
I can't even begin to describe how this audiobook will grab you right from the start. This is a definite MUST READ (listen in this case!) and if you are contemplating purchasing this book, stop contemplating and just get it.
One aspect of this audiobook that I truly thought was a great was having a different narrator for each character's chapter. I never knew I could change my opinion on the character and their situation so many times in one single book.
The surprise ending will just shock you and I in all seriousness recommend making sure you are alone and at home when listening to the final hour of this book. I made the mistake of finishing this book while grocery shopping and I literally stood in the canned food aisle staring at the cans with tears streaming down my face when all I wanted to do was just go to my car and cry.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and as my title to this review said, be prepared to want to drop everything to listen to this book as much as you possibly can!
I thought this book was absolutely terrible. About 2 hrs into this dreadful book I honestly wondered if the author was trying to get the reader to hate her main character. I didn't realize we were supposed to actually root for and care about her.
Ellie (main character) is so absolutely dreadful to listen to and her incessant whining and complaining made me want to throw my Ipod out the window. For whatever God forsaken reason I chose to finish this book and in hindsight I would have gladly just ate the cost of the audiobook to not have to finish this ridiculous nonsense. Take my advice and DO NOT waste your money on this title. I only wish I had read the other reviews first.
Terry McMillan's book will have you gripped immediately. Any person can relate to the main characters thoughts and feelings surrounding the events occuring in her life. The narrator did a fantastic job with all the different characters she had to voice and her skill and talent made the book just come alive. This book will have you laughing out loud more times than you thought possible! While I wouldn't describe this book as a comedy necessarily, the thoughts and observations of the main character are so fun to listen too! I would highly recommend this book not only for the great plot, but also for a great way to spend time listening to a great book! I have been buying audio books for nearly a year and a half and this book definitely ranks in my top 10!
The narrator of this title did a fantastic job. Her voice and expression convey the main characters thoughts and emotions perfectly. Readers will be hooked immediately! McCafferty is a very talented writer and if anyone has read her first two books, this third installment not only satisfies, it leads the reader wanting a fourth installment! With that said, the reader can instantly feel caught up though by McCafferty's excellent ability to weave the plots of her previous books to where the reader doesn't feel like they missed a thing if this is their first. I would highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who wants a fun and light 'read' and to laugh out loud many times throughout, but also wants to think and feel and care at the same time! Very excellent!
