I should probably rate this 4 star because it is not the fault of the author that I probably was not the intended audience. It was a good story and perfect for a young adult. It was a litte sophmoric for my own taste. Narrator performance was excellent.
disclaimer - I adore the Outlander series of book by Diana Galbaldon, narrated by Davina Porter. They made me love historical fiction. I am always searching for more like it. The story and performance of Madame Picasso does not come close to the perfection I find in listening to the Outlander books, and maybe it's just not fair to use those books & Davina's performances as a measuring stick for other books. That being said, I was able to finish this story, it was OK, but I didn't love it. I didn't really end up caring so much for the characters that were depicted and I never got a vivid feel for that specific moment in history or the places that were described. The accents by the narrator seemed 2nd rate to me. I would probably not recommend it to anyone I know, especially to those I know who are already familiar with the quality of story and performance of the Outlander books.
I bought this as a daily deal and I think it was a mistake to listen to this book right after I finished listening to 'Pillars of the Earth' - the high quality of 'Pillars' made the 'Mark of the Demon' feel like a cheap guilty pleasure. Not close to the same quality of story, character development & performance. I realize we are talking apples & oranges here but it was such a contrast I think it affected by ability to fairly review this book. It wasn't bad, but it was like junk food.......it was a gory romance novel. Probably better for younger reader, maybe 15-25yrs. I would have adored this book when i was 15 ;)
Very fun story that kept me wanting more. Narrator was excellent and portrayed each character with great skill.
