Due to the reviews, I was looking forward to this book. I should have returned it but due to the reviews I kept giving it a chance. I wished the author had stayed on story path of a mom, down in her luck and in need of work and her employer's occupation. I found this story line solid. Sadly, the author had too many story lines and many should have been eliminated. Also, I find it difficult to believe that two sisters living in the same town not running in to each other sooner! Really, with two teenage kids and one sister being in law enforcement they should have run in to each other! Lastly, I found Millie beyond annoying and for the two possible final outcomes I hope for the latter.
Well written book. Some long winded and frequently used analogies but sparing those it was a good book.
Wonderfully written, narrated and a very good book. A must read/listen!!!!! I've been recommending this book to a lot of my friends.
The only reason I got this audible was that it was a Poe Nominee. I really disliked the book and don't understand how it won a nomination. In my opinion the author has too many story lines. The book would have been better if 2 story lines were told. Also, some of the story is hard to believe. Really, watching a father figured murdered, informing the family of the loss and pain associated with the loss, driving the father's blood soaked car to work the next day and actually working the next day. What? Who does that and what kind of employer allows that. Also, the narration was extremely bad. The narrator has horrible accents and at points I laughed when I heard different -- and so called different -- ethnic accents. The narrator needs to stick to only a male English accent.
I would only recommend this book if you are in need of an easy read or listen book - preferably a book while traveling.
Based on several source recommendations and audible reviews I tried this book out and I really LIKE it. After one book, I'm a fan of Reginald Hill and I have some of his other books in my wish list. The author is a fantastic writer of thrillers; especially with so many characters. He can build characters and keep several story lines going. He writes like very few others can with the plots and characters. I haven't even mentioned the twists and turns.
I, like others, have enjoyed this series. My only two negative comments are 1) I've always disliked when a character is written to be immortal, se of the final fights, for instance on the rooftop, where Katniss seems immortal are too much and 2) a good section of the last parts of the book seemed too rushed. Outside of all this I felt the final installment was solid for the series.
Based on the reviews I downloaded this book and found it completely fascinating. It was a page turner I rooted for several characters (which I rarely do). I would recommend this book to everyone I know.
Completely enjoyable. Robert, aka J.K., has done it again. I'm praying for a series of these books. I've told a lot of folks to read this book! The author kept me tuned in. At times I was expecting to know who the killer was before it was revealed but the author kept the tide turning.
I listen to a number of audible books each year. I have a favorite genre but every third book I listen to a non-fictional; preferably a fact-based story with suspense and intrigue. This book did not FAIL. The author did a great job in his research and telling a story of several people's viewpoint without writing opinions of right or wrong. Due to the author's research I learned a lot about the manhunt involved with finding Lincoln's killer.
Fact based book which was gripping, sad (because it was true) and a solid story about the dealings of life. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes true fiction (crime or mystery) but a book which allows us to reflect and analyze life.
