  • Gone with the Wind

    • UNABRIDGED (49 hrs and 7 mins)
    • By Margaret Mitchell
    • Narrated By Linda Stephens

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Margaret Mitchell's great novel of the South is one of the most popular books ever written. Within six months of its publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind had sold a million copies. To date, it has been translated into 25 languages, and more than 28 million copies have been sold. Here are the characters that have become symbols of passion and desire....

dallas says: "not to miss audible experience"
"Love this book! The narrator is fantastic!"

I hadn't read Gone with the Wind nor seen the movie so this audible book was my first experience. I went into it expecting a good story because it is a classic after all, but it's so much more than I expected. Oh what a story! All the characters are so full of life and rich with flaws. I loved each and every one of them.

And the narrator is amazing! I loved her southern accent. She brought Scarlet to life in all her haughty glory. I will definitely listen to this one again and again.

  • Daemon

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Daniel Suarez
    • Narrated By Jeff Gurner
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Thousands of autonomous computer programs, or daemons, make our networked world possible, running constantly in the background of our lives, trafficking e-mail, transferring money, and monitoring power grids. For the most part, daemons are benign, but the same can't always be said for the people who design them.

Erica says: "Possibly The Best Techno-thriller Ever"
    "A long road to nowhere..."

I was so disappointed in this book. The rating on Audible is almost 5 stars but I don't understand why. The technological aspects of the book were interesting and certainly the author took a lot of time to weave a story full of it. But the rest of the story wasn't enjoyable. I had to force myself to listen to the entire book. I sped up the narration to get through it faster because I just wanted the book to end. The characters were mostly horrible people that I couldn't stand and a few poorly developed "heroes" with whom I couldn't identify.

But what gets this book such a bad review from me is the absolute depravity of the acts of graphic violence, including rape, mutilation, torture and murder, that take place throughout the book with seemingly no rhyme or reason. I got to the end of the book with my hopes of a point to all the misery dashed on the rocks of despair. Actually I think the point was to demonstrate the cool technology ideas the author came up with (which were cool) but I need more from a book. I want at least one character with whom I can identify and hope succeeds in the story. There were no such characters (perhaps simply because none of them were developed by the author).

The narrator did fine with what he had. I have no complaints of him other than that he actually narrated this book.

  • The Help

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Kathryn Stockett
    • Narrated By Jenna Lamia, Bahni Turpin, Octavia Spencer, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"
    "I loved this book!"
What made the experience of listening to The Help the most enjoyable?

This is a touching story of 3 courageous women from different sides of the black and white line in the deep south. I fell in love with each of these women and this story. The danger surrounding all of them was palpable and my hope that everything would turn out okay was so strong you'd think I actually knew them in real life. I'll listen to it many more times.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

There are 3 different narrators in for this story and each does such a wonderful job on the characters they narrate. Even if I had already read the actual book I'd still want to listen to this audiobook to re-live the story through these narrators.
