Anchored by a pair of interlocking love stories, this unflinching novel of ideas brims with passionate quests, revelatory failures, and inextinguishable hope. The Rowan Tree is an inspirational tour de force that reaches from the rebellious American '60s into humanity's global future. Soul-searching treks around the world intersect with campus revolution, basketball, math, ballet, and a destined rise to the White House. Love runs ahead of politics and lights the way for nations to follow.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Have someone else narrate. While I enjoyed Mr. Fuller's story, he should not have narrated it. His narration was tedious/monotonous to listen to and without the "acting out" or performance of the parts of the different characters. The story itself was interesting and was the only reason I kept going, but it would have been better with a good narrator who could have better performed the different roles.

Would you be willing to try another one of Robert W. Fuller’s performances?

No. He needs to stick to writing the books.

Do you think The Rowan Tree needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    No.

Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands is the story of Emily Shepard, a homeless teen living in an igloo made of ice and trash bags filled with frozen leaves. Half a year earlier, a nuclear plant in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom had experienced a cataclysmic meltdown, and both of Emily's parents were killed. Devastatingly, her father was in charge of the plant, and the meltdown may have been his fault. Was he drunk when it happened?

I was very caught up by the story of this young girl. However, his daughter, Grace's, narration was flat and uninflected, clearly showed a lack of ability to read with character. A professional narrator or actor would have made the story even more riveting.

Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

I always try to finish listening to a book, but in this case finally gave up. The story was a mixed up version of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, but not as enthralling as any of the above. A bunch of boring teenagers/young adults who can't get it together, whine a lot, drink a lot and occasionally they do some magic. Their ennui was infectious, as the book just bored me.

With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends. Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations - and where her destiny awaits.

I almost stopped listening to this story due to the horrible narration by Ms. Kellgtren. Her Irish accent was so horrendous that she made all of the female Irish characters sound like Maggie Smith as Professor McGonegall, meaning they all sounded like world weary 70 year old matriarchs. I had a hard time picturing the characters as 20 year olds. The men's were almost as bad. The American character, on the other hand, sounded like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.

The saving grace was that the story was good. I am looking forward to the sequels, but hope that another, more talented narrator is used.

Two American sisters, Christine and Elizabeth Shepherd, are on a silk-buying trip in India for their business in California. After Elizabeth mysteriously disappears, Christine is compelled to challenge the ineffectual U.S. and Indian bureaucracies and venture alone, with various strangers as guides, to find her sister. Disguised in the traditional female garb of some Islamic cultures, Christine continues her search in Afghanistan and Pakistan. She navigates the mysterious tribes of the Pashtuns, has a dangerous encounter with the Taliban, and learns to fear the "Jinn", the devils that dominate the superstitions of the people she must understand in order to survive.

Would you try another book from Cheryl Howard Crew and/or Bryce Howard?

Probably not. The main character was an incredibly stupid woman who continuously made error after error in her life. What is the point of reading about a weak and stupid character. I was looking for a story of a woman who overcame an adverse circumstance with intelligence and bravery, not stupid and pointless decisions.

I am not sure that I would read/listen to another story by Erin Morgenstern. The story was too long and quite depressing. However, I give points for the highly creative world created in the story. I was listening half the time to hear about the fabulous circus which the characters lived in

What about Jim Dale???s performance did you like?

    Mr. Dale's narration was lovely.

Fate has not been kind to Gemma Hardy. Orphaned then neglected, young Gemma seemed destined for a life of hardship and loneliness. Yet her bright spirit burns strong. Fiercely intelligent, singularly determined, Gemma overcomes each challenge and setback, growing stronger and more certain of her path. Now an independent young woman, she accepts a position as an au pair on the remote and beautiful Orkney Islands. But Gemma’s biggest trial is about to begin....

This story's plot and story line are not very original. Listeners will fairly quickly recognize that the author is recreating the story of Jane Eyre in 1950's and 1960's Scotland. That being said, I loved Jane Eyre and enjoyed this modern re-telling of the story with all the twists and turns that Gemma has to navigate. However, I was disappointed in the end as it was somewhat abrupt. Another chapter to fill out how life turned out for Gemma would have been more satisfying. Davina Porter's reading was, as usual, well done and pleasant to listen to with all of the different accents done quite nicely.

When Elspeth Noblin dies of cancer, she leaves her London apartment to her twin nieces, Julia and Valentina. These two American girls never met their English aunt; they only knew that their mother, too, was a twin, and Elspeth her sister. Julia and Valentina are semi-normal American teenagers - with seemingly little interest in college, finding jobs, or anything outside their cozy home in the suburbs of Chicago, and with an abnormally intense attachment to one another.

    Overall

This story started out well and I was looking forward to the twins learning and developing as they had their experiences in London and with the other characters. Instead, the story took a strange and disturbing turn which was, to quote another reviewer, "icky". I listened to the end of the story, but there was never any real redemption after the story took the strange turn. I would not recommend this book. A better choice and book I really enjoyed was The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.

I loved this book and didn't want it to end. Ms. Morton very cleverly interweaves the evolving stories of each character, slowly revealing the solution to the mystery which begins the book. I hope she continues to write more books like this one.
