"dont waste a credit - you have been warned"
Here is the honest truth on this book.
1) the first 2 or 3 hours are kind of painfull as the performance by the reader is too much. She squeeks & screams the lines. This improves greatly after that & she does a good job. But you have to get through the first section.
2) the story really isn't that well written - I mean - its not a good story - The last 30 minutes were good - but when she was captured by the cult of "we are not mormons" who make her attend school.... come on - that just sucks. The title has nothing to do with the story & it seems that ashes are a side note & not related to anything that is happening.
3) This might be a good book for a younger person looking for something a little scary - maybe an early teenager. Us older folks expect more.
"What a great book!"
James Lee Burke's writing is rich and flavorful and so full of expression you can smell the desert air!
Will Patton???s interpretation of the book is excellent.
"Impressed I well may be"
This is my kind of story - for anyone who has been to Belfast, or New York (or a Mexican prison!) the author does a great job of capturing the spirit of these places.
Love the story & the characters!
"Not that bad - but its no 'hunt for red october'"
I don't know - maybe Tom has lost touch with his roots. The book is OK - well written & has a good story. But I miss the detailed drama of the older books. Just like his last installment 'tiger' he spends too much time having Jack Sr. give political speeches & not nearly enough detailed high tension man hunter action of the books of old. In the end it is worth the read - but maybe I just miss the good old days.
"Where were the 'Ops'?"
The book was OK - but there were a few things I didn't like. First - no real Russian spy would magically fall in love with spy who she defected too. It was just too cheesy. Second - despite all the tension & sneaking around - there weren't any ops in the book until the end. I thought there would be more action & less cheesy love.
"poor audio quality"
I've wanted to listen to this one for a while. Unfortunately it is very difficult to make out what they are saying because the recording quality is poor. I couldn't finish the book, because I couldn't follow it.
