Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

As a senior citizen, this book was great. The author really knows nursing home life. This is a wonderful story, well witten and very well spoken. I liked the surprise ending.

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

Who was your favorite character and why?

Martha seems to be the main character.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It is hard to understand why the Department of State refused to believe Ambassador Dodd's evaluation of what was going on in Germany in 1933. Had they done so, World War II might have been avoided.

America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

    "A Dark Tale"
    Overall

A very dark tale by a great writer. The story of a man and his young son wandering south in the United States after the destruction of the earth by fire. I found it both hard to listen and difficult to stop. Like "No Country for Old Men" it has a lousy ending. What else for the end times! I give it 4 stars.

John Grisham's first work of nonfiction, an exploration of small town justice gone terribly awry, is his most extraordinary legal thriller yet.

I have read or listened to every Grisham book. This book is a poor copy of "In
Cold Blood." I think he needs to stick with fiction. It is like reading a court transcript and about as entertaining.

Chapter by chapter, Graham leads us on a journey in faith. We learn about God and His purpose for our lives; who Jesus is and what He has done for us. We learn to deal with challenges along the way: temptation; wrong thoughts and motives; habits that destroy our spirit; and what to do when life turns against us.

    Overall

Every Billy Graham book I have read leaves me with something to think about. He covers every conceivable life event in this book. It starts off with information for seekers. It ends with suggestions for the mature. It is a book written to Christians. It made me think about my journey through life.

The author does another outstanding job of a story with a very intricate plot. I like his writing stile and it is easy to listen and follow. I only recently have been re-introduced to this author and am grateful.

An interesting story of the world's fair held in Chicago in 1893. The companion story of a serial killer fits only by chance. The author states he spent considerable time and effort to make this book factual.

This book has way too much detail and Army jargon, but it gives the listener insight into the politics of the wars in the Middle East. It should be required reading for everyone. I did not listen to the abridged version, but it might a better choice.

The Killer Angels is the Pulitzer Prize-winning story of the Battle of Gettysburg, four of the bloodiest and bravest days in America's history. Shaara's sweeping, unforgettable story is told from the viewpoints of the men present, relying primarily on their own words, their letters, and other documents to bring to life the voices and noises of that bloody battle.

Barbara says: "Try the whole thing"
"A great story with an exceptional reader!"
    Overall

This is a great book from beginning to end. The narrator George Hearn is spectacular. I will look for more of his readings. I am rather new to Civil War reading. I was stimulated by the movie Gods and Generals and the biography of Thomas Jackson. This is the second best book I have "read" this year.
