Winter Makepeace lives a double life. By day he's the stoic headmaster of a home for foundling children. But the night brings out a darker side of Winter. As the moon rises, so does the Ghost of St. Giles-protector, judge, fugitive. When the Ghost, beaten and wounded, is rescued by a beautiful aristocrat, Winter has no idea that his two worlds are about to collide. Lady Isabel Beckinhall enjoys nothing more than a challenge. Yet when she's asked to tutor the Home's dour manager in the ways of society, Isabel can't help wondering why his eyes seem so familiar - and his lips so tempting.

Employed on different sides of a vicious dispute between factions of the Bonds, Sabetha has just one goal-to destroy Locke forever.

I love the tales of Locke and Jean, and the latest book is good, but not great. We learn more about Locke and Sabetha--though it's not very fulfilling. Still looking forward to the next book, but you could probably skip this one and not miss much.

Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Tango says: "Enchanting Debut Novel - Delicious!"
"Magical, yet simultaneously down to Earth."

Well developed characters, interesting and relaxed story-telling, with much insight into human nature. The story unfolds within rich and realistic contexts that, although are 100 years in the past, feel very much present and alive.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library.

I really gave this book a chance. I listened until almost the end, and then I couldn't take it anymore. The average writing style and predictability of the story became too overwhelming. Everything about it is just plain and average. Not terrible, not great, a string of blah-romance and tepid twists. Very vanilla.
