In this novel of family and redemption, a mother struggles to save her 18-year-old daughter from the devastating consequences of mental illness by forcing her to deal with her bipolar disorder. New York Times best-selling author Bebe Moore Campbell draws on her own powerful emotions and African-American roots, showcasing her best writing yet.

Kevin says: "Very interesting book on mental health..."
    "Thank You Mrs. Cambell"
    Overall

Sad to understand what the author had to deal with as a mother of a child with mental illness. Once again she creates a story and characters that make the reader care. I could not give the book five stars only because of the reader. She's terrible when taking on the voices of the other characters. Instead of drawing you into the story she abruptly pulls you out. I will add the paper version to my library.

All decent parents want to do what's best for their children. What Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother reveals is that the Chinese just have a totally different idea of how to do that. Western parents try to respect their children's individuality, encouraging them to pursue their true passions and providing a nurturing environment. The Chinese believe that the best way to protect your children is by preparing them for the future and arming them with skills, strong work habits, and inner confidence.

Diana - Audible says: "Surprisingly touching (and well-read)"
    "Self Indulgent? Just a bit."

Ok. I get it. "Western Parents" need to be harder on our kids. That's what I've taken from it. After you get that message, you're stuck with hour upon hour of listening to poor writing from an author so impressed with herself that it becomes irritating. I'm so surprised at what "Western" society puts on our bestseller lists sometimes. This is really bad writing and maybe worse narration. It's poor even aside from her unconventional, sometimes kooky parental decisions. Make your kids more responsible and engage more in their lives. Got it? Ok, now you can skip the book.

Audible presents the multigenerational epic Some Sing, Some Cry. Created by Ntozake Shange and Ifa Bayeza, this audiobook takes listeners on a journey through Reconstruction, two world wars, the Harlem renaissance, and Vietnam to modern day America. Some Sing, Some Cry begins at the threshold of one family’s freedom. We meet Betty Mayfield, newly emancipated from Sweet Tamarind, a lush and haunted rice plantation off the Carolina coast.

Absolutely beautiful. The collaboration of the two sisters and the narrator is a success! This book has left me with the dilemma of what could I possibly read next? Seven generations through love, music, and social changes took me on a ride of emotion and sent me to the computer for research. BRAVO!!

Thirty-eight year old Cassandra is lost, alone, and grieving. Her much loved grandmother, Nell, has just died and Cassandra, her life already shaken by a tragic accident 10 years ago, feels like she has lost everything known and dear to her.

I bought this on an Audible sale based on some semi-positive reviews. I wasn't expecting much, but I was pulled into the "maze" of the story. I continually tried to get a step ahead of Miss Morton, but always fell a step behind. That's how I like my stories. I was pleased.

The Corrections is a grandly entertaining novel for the new century - a comic, tragic masterpiece about a family breaking down in an age of easy fixes. Richly realistic, darkly hilarious, deeply humane, it confirms Jonathan Franzen as one of our most brilliant interpreters of American society and the American soul.

Charles says: "A memorable book; flawless narration"
    "I Tried"
    Overall

I was hoping for something more. I read the reviews that stated it was depressing and I thought that I could deal with a few dark clouds in my literature. . .However, none of the reviewers mentioned just how boring this book is. I cannot give these characters my attention because the plot seems to be taking a slow, slow ride to NoWheresVille.
