Legends never die....Old friends are reunited and ancient secrets revealed as Kirk, Spock, Picard, Riker, Data, and all of the Federation's best and brightest are enmeshed in a cosmic saga that will test their strengths and loyalties to the very limit. A personal tale of tragedy and triumph that could only have been written - and read - by William Shatner!

What disappointed you about Star Trek?

Story was predictable with far too many plot holes. Shatner's performances are always a bit campy but he reaches new heights in this reading. I'm a long time Star Trek fan who grew up on TOS and even I had a hard time listening to this.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The idea of visiting the Borg homeworld was novel but coul dhave been done much better

Would you be willing to try another one of William Shatner’s performances?

    No

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Would you listen to One Second After again? Why?

Maybe. After reading some scholarly article on the subject I may go back to compare with details from the book

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character - John Matheson. Strong character. The story gives you the opportunity to observe the thought processes as he makes a series of very difficult decisiions

Which character – as performed by Joe Barrett – was your favorite?

    The Doctor

    Any additional comments?

I almost didn't buy this book when I saw that Newt Gingrich was doing the forward thinking it was going to be a real right wing propaganda piece. To a certain extent it was. The story presents a frightening scenario of a U.S. left paralyzed by an unknown enemy who launches a devastating EMP attack. What the author doesn't tell you is that this is a worst case scenario and unlikely to play out as badly as portrayed in the book if it were to happen in real life. Just the same, such an event could create huge casualties and extensive economic disruption. I couldn't help imagining what precautions I might take in advance to prepare for such an event only to realize all too quickly that there really isn't much you could do that would make much of a difference for more than a few weeks.

Its a truly thought provoking book if you keep in mind that its very much a worst case scenario rather than a most likely scenario.

The Western Front, 1916. Private Percy Blakeney wakes up. He is lying on fresh spring grass. He can hear birdsong and the wind in the leaves. Where have the mud, blood, and blasted landscape of no-man's-land gone? For that matter, where has Percy gone? Madison, Wisconsin, 2015. Police officer Monica Jansson is exploring the burned-out home of a reclusive - some say mad, others allege dangerous - scientist who seems to have vanished. Sifting through the wreckage, Jansson find a curious gadget.

If you could sum up The Long Earth in three words, what would they be?

    Where's the climax?

Would you ever listen to anything by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter again?

    No

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Nothing stands out

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No

    Any additional comments?

I don't usually trash a book. I know how hard the creative process is but with all the writers trying to get their books published out there its hard to believe this one slipped through. I bought this book after reading the synopsis thinking that it sounded interesting. The main characters were moderately appealing but ironically this story of two characters who cross a million worlds was like a road trip that never really went anywhere. I kept waiting for something to happen and then it just ended.. at least i think it ended. When i finally reached the end I thought there must be some chapters missing because it just fell flat. Definitely not worth the credit and time i invested.
