I love Marianne Williamson and whenever I start to feel a little lost in life, I find something from her to read or listen to. Works like a charm every time. Her lessons are simple and a gentle reminder to be good to ourselves and to each other. This particular download is a series of lectures on relationships and sheds light on how to get over the anger, frustration and bitterness sometimes associated with family relationships.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Anastasia Burke says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"
"An amazing story that should be read by all!"

If you could sum up Unbroken in three words, what would they be?

    Important, harrowing story

Which character – as performed by Edward Herrmann – was your favorite?

    Zamperini

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes!!!!!!!

    Any additional comments?

I put off listening to this book for years, thinking, "Oh! It is just so long and what if it's boring?" It was anything but boring. This is an amazing book, written so well. I could taste, see, feel what it was like for the men who were captured.

From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees, a magnificent novel about two unforgettable American women. Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world - and it is now the newest Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

If you could sum up The Invention of Wings in three words, what would they be?

    Important historical insight

What other book might you compare The Invention of Wings to and why?

Red River, Cane River and The Help because they all provide insight into the time in America where there were slaves. In my opinion, these books show, with brutal honesty the thoughts and feelings of both the slave and the master and how much difference one person can make.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

Sarah Grimke- she seemed very real to me.

Who was the most memorable character of The Invention of Wings and why?

When Sarah Grimke comes home to find Hetty in her bathtub and the two find a way to keep the secret from the rest of the family. It was very poignant for me, the push and pull of emotions and the ability of a young woman to be amazingly brave.

  • The Testament of Mary

    Story
    (240)

Meryl Streep’s performance of Colm Tóibín's acclaimed portrait of Mary is hailed by the New York Times Book Review as “an ideal audiobook,” presenting the three-time Academy Award-winner in “yet another great role.” Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Colm Tóibín's The Testament of Mary presents Mary as a solitary older woman still seeking to understand the events that become the narrative of the New Testament and the foundation of Christianity. In the ancient town of Ephesus, Mary lives alone, years after her son's crucifixion. She has no interest in collaborating with the authors of the Gospel. They are her keepers, providing her with food and shelter and visiting her regularly. She does not agree that her son is the Son of God; nor that his death was "worth it"; nor that the "group of misfits he gathered around him, men who could not look a woman in the eye," were holy disciples. This woman who we know from centuries of paintings and scripture as the docile, loving, silent, long-suffering, obedient, worshipful mother of Christ becomes a tragic heroine with the relentless eloquence of Electra or Medea or Antigone, in a portrait so vivid and convincing that our image of Mary will be forever transformed.

    C. Telfair says: "A living, breathing woman"
    "AMAZING!"

What did you love best about The Testament of Mary?

It was a mother's perspective of what happened. It gives you a totally different viewpoint of what happened to Jesus.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Testament of Mary?

The part where she is in the crowd at the crucifixtion of Jesus and must decide whether to stay or go for her own personal safety.

What about Meryl Streep’s performance did you like?

Her voice has such depth and she played the part of a grieving mother so well.

If you could rename The Testament of Mary, what would you call it?

    A Mother's Love

    Any additional comments?

This is a wonderful, quick book well read by Merryl Streep. I loved it.

The landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, brought the promise of integration to Little Rock, Arkansas, but it was hard-won for the nine black teenagers chosen to integrate Central High School in 1957. They ran a gauntlet flanked by a rampaging mob and a heavily armed Arkansas National Guard-opposition so intense that soldiers from the elite 101st Airborne Division were called in to restore order.

If you could sum up Warriors Don't Cry in three words, what would they be?

    Powerful, important and insightful.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Warriors Don't Cry?

When Melba has a Sweet 16 party, something she has looked forward to for years and it does not turn out how she dreamed. Heartbreaking.

Have you listened to any of Lisa Reneé Pitts’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I did like the narrator.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A story of survival against the cruelty of others.

    Any additional comments?

I hope everyone reads this. It is an important part of US history. I have seen the photos of the Little Rock 9, but this brings the whole thing to life in painstaking detail.

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

This is a book that really allows you to dive into his world, the colors, smells, taste of Ireland.

This story is compelling and inspiring.
