For more than 30 years, Edie and Richard Middlestein shared a solid family life together in the suburbs of Chicago. But now things are splintering apart, for one reason, it seems: Edie's enormous girth. She's obsessed with food - thinking about it, eating it - and if she doesn't stop, she won't have much longer to live. When Richard abandons his wife, it is up to the next generation to take control. With pitch-perfect prose, huge compassion, and sly humor, Jami Attenberg has given us an epic story of marriage, family, and obsession.

The review says "pitch perfect prose, huge compassion & sly humor" - I did not find these qualities in the book and found it largely depressing but for a moment or two of compassion ... forget about humor; sly or otherwise

Three people living lives they never wanted, hiding secrets that even those closest to them would never suspect, will find that the past never truly fades away. Even as the terrible consequences of long-ago events crash together in the present and threaten to ruin lives, they will come to the startling realization that they may not want to forget the past at all.

I don't think the plot line was epic or such a page turner as to stop daily activities but it was enjoyable. All in all, I wouldn't tell a friend to rush to the bookstore for it but its worthwhile if you have it.

Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. Sex-hungry and book-hungry, they would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumour, and wit. Maybe Adrian was more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life. Now Tony is retired. He’s had a career and a single marriage, a calm divorce. He’s certainly never tried to hurt anybody. Memory, though, is imperfect. It can always throw up surprises, as a lawyer’s letter is about to prove.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I just didn't enjoy the book. I bought it because it was showcased on the front page of audible. I probably should have read more reviews other than the editor's blurb. There was a lot of rambling thoughts with no real movement to the book & the end resolved nothing.
