"Thoroughly Ingrossing."
Wonderfully creepy and surprisingly claustrophobic tale. Narration is superb. Very well written. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a love of ghost stories.
"All Thoughts, No Scares."
Very disappointed in this one. For a story that is predominately talk and thoughts, there is very little character development. There is little suspense and absolutely no "horror" to this story. Sadly, it's not even interesting from a psychological viewpoint, although it is desperately trying to be that.
The premise is basically what happens to a small town when all inhibitions have gone. Lots of talk about sex, obsessions, and murder but very little actual action. We are led to believe from the title that there is a sinister force behind it all but "the summer man" is absent from 99% of the story. Teenage and middle age angst abounds.
Mediocre story with mediocre narration. Save your credit for something else.
"Delightfully Creepy"
Joe Hill surpasses his father in storytelling. Despite a few plot points that I didn't feel were adequately explained, I really enjoyed this book. The story never felt like it was dragging and there are few wonderfully creepy passages that gave my jaded ear a start. I thoroughly enjoyed Kate Mulgrew's narration, although I do understand why others may not like it. If you listen to the sample and are put off, spring for a print version. This story is definitely worth a credit.
"Simply Delightful"
Gail Carriger is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. If you enjoyed the Parasol Protectorate series, you will love Etiquette & Espionage. Being a YA book, it lacks the adult romance, but has a wonderful, plucky heroine and all the charm of the PP series. Adult listeners will not be bored. Very much looking forward to the next book in the series.
"Why do I like this series?"
The Zombie Fallout series is riddled with plot holes and inconsistencies. It is in desperate need of a good editor before it reaches publication. So why do I keep listening? The characters and the narration. Sean Runnette is the perfect embodiment of Michael Talbot and does an excellent job with all the characters. And Tufo has really given life to the characters in the book. We care about what happens to them.
Some are saying this is the last in the series, but I haven't seen any confirmation by Tufo on that and there are a lot of loose ends that need resolving. The Zombies still abound. I feel confident there will be a book 7, and I will gladly spend a credit on it.
"Meh"
"Meh" sums it up. Not bad, not great. Narrator's female characterizations were annoying. Not much of a mystery, villain is pretty obvious, as was the ending. Overall, it was ok but I can't recommend it.
"Sweet YA Story"
Not complicated, but has all the charm of Fforde's other works. Definitely geared for the young adult market, but still fun to listen to. The narrator did a nice job, although I found her breathy, male voices a bit annoying, but not enough to distract from the story. Worth a listen.
"Nice Mystery, Not So Scary"
I really enjoyed listening to this book. However, it was much more sci-fi mystery than horror. I think the story could have benefited from a different narrator. In some spots he appeared to be just rushing through the text and I didn't feel he really embodied the characters. That being said, I recommend giving it a listen. And I'll be looking for more Peter Clines books.
"Redemption For King"
I had stopped reading Stephen King a long time ago. I felt that he was very good at writing short stories, but the longer his stories get the more they fall apart. Here is his redemption. All the nostalgia that permeates his other stories actually have a place here. His excessive need to describe things works well here too. My biggest pet peeve though is his repetition of certain phrases, the hammering home of a point so often that it makes me want to scream "WE GET IT ALREADY! SHUT UP!". This still plays a part, but thankfully it doesn't get too annoying until near the end. And he has finally mastered the ending of a book.
This is not a horror novel, and is only slightly sci-fi. But it is a good journey. I recommend it.
"More, Please!"
I absolutely adored this book and didn't want it to end! I hear there is to be a sequel and can not wait! The one drawback is the narrator. The sing-song tone of her voice can be grating and when she tries to do a Belgian accent I want to claw my eyes out. I don't even know how she arrived at psuedo-cockney-German = Belgian. My suggestion is to listen to the sample, if you can tolerate that give it a try. If not, get the paperback or ebook!
"A Return To Scary Vampires!"
So refreshing to hear a vampire story where they aren't sparkly, sexy, tormented immortals! Vampires are supposed to be scary and Thomas Emson remembered that. The characters are very real. I could have done without the political ranting about the Iraq war, but overall enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next 2 books. Arthur Darvill (Rory from Doctor Who) does an excellent job narrating and I hope he will narrate the rest of the series.
